We are also supposed to have long, loose (untied) hair, and in some cases the father is supposed to do a ritual to redirect darkness towards him away from us so he can destroy it.With this in mind, I'm sure you can see how the process of giving birth in even the last couple of centuries or in overly civilized places removed from spirituality completely ignore this.
