Why is most religious garb a robe of some kind?

Simplified tailoring? In cases of mendicant monks, easier to just lift up and piss or shit. There might be cases where modesty is maintained because even the curviest nun looks like a shapeless blob in a large enough robe. What the overt /x/ answer though? It helps you fly or you can use it to swing at demons and trap them? I don't know.

Specifically for Buddhist monks, the traditional way the robe is worn is a bit awkward, to help promote mindfulness in the wearer.
