Expected rate of relative brightness gain from Earth slowly approaching is negligible compared to expected rate of absolute brightness decrease due to distancing from Sun
This getting brighter can easily mean it's coming at us and "getting bigger" as it approaches, all the while keeping co-linear with its expected trajectory
Think of looking at a drone you expect for some reason to fly above a road perpendicular to you, at 30mph, visible due to an open field between you and the drone
