When I was a teen my friends and I were fucking around in the trails of some woods in middle Tennessee at around 11:30pm one summer night so we could find a cool place to smoke weed. After a few moments, the crickets and cicaidas stopped chirping, the frogs stopped croaking, and the only noise in the forest was this shriek and the sound of our footsteps. Kind of like in the mall case where the sound was "scooped up." Nobody said a word and we kept walking. A few more moments passed, and the shriek became much closer than before, and seemed to be coming from both behind us, above us, and to the right of us. Again, not a word was spoken, but every one of us broke into a full sprint off the trail and towards the truck. By the time we were almost out of the forest, the noise was literally right on top of us. Three of us jump into the bed, including me, while two of my friends hurry into the cab. For the few seconds before the driver slammed the door and started the engine, there was just dead space. No sound or shriek whatsoever in a typically loud summer forest.
