The average person has never been as critically rigorous (even if that's quite different from being scientifically literate or knowledgeable) as in our times, but for some reason the same demand for rigor is not applied at all in religious discussions. In fact, what happens is that people get a slightly less shallow knowledge and completely distort it so it fits into their preconceptions, while at the same time inflating its importance disproportionately. For example, people rediscovering Gnosticism or catching up on the millenia-old discussions that the Churches have already been performing, and acting as if they're on the vanguard of truth. I could excuse all of this by assuming it's merely a new generation learning history, but the core edgy atheist attitude just never really goes away so the discussion gets instantly undermined by acid skepticism and the same fedora tipping jokes. Who knows, it's not like this doesn't happen with sciences either, the amount of times I see people regurgitating basic biological knowledge (with all the "achstually"s) and pretending to be geniuses is astonishing. Maybe more dire consequences of the internet spilling over into reality, because nowhere else you have this amount of intellectually dishonest discussion.
