This "inhabiting a vessel" you speak of, this connection between Gods and men is in fact mentioned by Proclus, Iamblichus and even Plato himself but they extend it even to beasts and otherwise lifeless objects. I will add these alliances are never caused of a desire for great physical prowess over others but rather because of an integration into unity through a deep concentrated sympathetic congruency between the psycho-physical entity and the corresponding essential form.

With a broken back, blind and deaf, scrawny and with my organs damaged from falling from a tree I lifted a boy who threatened to kick my ass off the ground by the neck with one hand, and he was about a foot taller than me and much heavier. Later when I was no longer blind and deaf I did it a couple more times to another young boy and a young man, both of them larger than I, the older one almost twice my weight.Part of it was I had some retard strength back then from the brain damage, part of it was my timing as I lifted them right as they went for an uppercut, and their upwards motion made it easier; but part of it was occult power.But I have trained in the occult all of my life.
