In the episode 200 of stargate, the US government creates a fake show about the stargate they keep hidden, just in case some rumors leak about its existence, they can deny them and make fun of the leakers saying "you got that idea from the tv show".Is this the reason why stargate was released at all? I do believe the US government has a stargate somewhere in a military facility

They did have something named project Stargate that was a study on remote viewing. Funny thing about remote viewing is that, supposedly, it's just as easy to view something in the room next to you only 10 feet away as it is to see something on another planet or another galaxy. So assuming they had ANY success with remote viewing some test cards, then they'd also be able to see other planets and such.
