Stalin was OBSESSED with aviation.
Aviation = modernity. Modernity = legitimacy.
They already had:

>Massive state-sponsored flights
>Women pilots as propaganda tools

What they DIDN’T have? An internationally beloved American woman aviator. Look at the route.

“But why would she defect???”

>Why classify a plane crash?

She didn’t crash. She didn’t get eaten by crabs. She didn’t get captured by the Japanese. She chose the red star over the stars and stripes. And the greatest trick? Making the world argue about fuel calculations instead of ideology.
