Fasting. Prayer. Night vigil. Loving the enemy even if they literally tortured you. Semen retention/celibacy. Vows of poverty. Eating only food that has been freely given. Physical work or strain, like heavy exercise. Even death itself. Anything that removes your will entirely, denies yourself of your wants and needs, removes the desire to increase comfort and decrease discomfort.Why does it work that way? I don't know, I can't explain the mechanism but there's an esoteric truth to be found in the absolute and utter lack of any basic comforts and needs of the self. Some of my biggest transformations and realizations and steepest growth happened in times of extreme deprivation, exhaustion and hunger/need.
