Traditionally the soul = personality/character/etc and spirit = eternal spark/connection to God.
They got merged and melded and kind of flipped around at some point so that spirit became "the essence of something" (esprit de corps, teen spirit, etc.) and soul became "the eternal part of self."

It's very muddled and honestly it's better to look to other models and terms for clarity.
Atma = eternal self
Ahankar/Buddhi/Manas = Ego/intelligence/mind
