if the soul is eternal why don't I remember before I was born?

You didn't have a brain to store memories. Anyway, "you" came from the future, not the past. It's a common mistake people make.

why did I come here?

If time is a flat circle will I be here again? Have I been here before?

They make up various excuses.
Socrates came up with the idea that we remember stuff, but I've always doubted it.
Perhaps aspects of our souls divide. Perhaps only the strongest wills remain whole, perhaps we spend a good deal of time traveling to other solar systems or galaxies before reincarnating.

Sometimes you naturally do remember.

But if you really want to remember you need to go into deep meditative states (samadhi) to remember your past lives.

I don't know, but even though I believe reincarnation is an actual phenomenon, I don't think it's a case of individual souls recycling into new incarnations as distinct and discrete units. I think when we die our souls all get recycled into the same soul goop and then repackaged into new soul units. That might explain why some people get glimpses of what they think are past life memories but can't remember the whole thing. I think that we all share past lives and that the soul is eternal as an extension of the reconstituted soul goop being eternal. I can't prove any of this, it's just my intuition.

Like a video game, the soul is the person using the controller,
playing the character
Of course the character in the game doesn't have a memory outside of the game.
This also follows quantum reality? Quantum death? You die, but the game restarts, and the character can keep going: One instance of the character died, but another continues on.
It further follows deja vu, how can the character know what's coming in advance? Almost like a premonition to go look over here, and find a stash of items, or exploit some hack, but the character would only understand it as intuition, not a higher power, not an external controller.
This follows with what, apparently, EBE said, saying it feels sorry for humans, because, "You (we) have to live it."
Now what could EBE mean by that? We have to live what? Our lives? Issss there something outside of this? Bega the questions.
And if you believe that, consider then Lazar, saying something about himmas have been referred to as "containers".
Cooooontainers of what? For what end? How so? More questions...
Circle back, the video game character is a sort of container, a container of your will, intent, certainly input.
But what happens when you're done playing the game?
And it's not a purely digital game, think of it like controlling an RC car - if you drive that RC car into the grand canyon, it's game over, if you get it run over by a car in the street, a sibling chucks it down the steps, or the batteries die, if the controller moves on, we'll, those are all "game over."
Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
Hopefully it isn't as gay as these other theories, because dang, they are pretty gay.
