Not super popular but the MMO "The Secret World" has some good stuff. Definitely a hodge podge but the closest I have seen to a single IP getting most things right (still didn't figure out the alien angle though).

I'll bite. Let's look at time travel movies.

Terminator was wild for its time, the future reaching back to our present to change or preserve the future.

I always liked Primer even if it was a little pretentious. I see a lot of similarities with the time travel in Tenet, such as how you can go faster than time but only in the other direction.

Go a little further if you want to explore what time is three-dimensional space would be like, I've enjoyed the Outland series by Dennis e Taylor. Imagine multiple timelines running concurrently and parallel to each other.

Each is stacking upon the other in complexity. What's the next step up?

Ok this is the serious one. This game is extremely fucking occult and every single story beat and moment is a clear, multilayered message designed to program the player into a particular way of thinking Either that or it’s instructive on how to break out of the matrix and/or the demiurge.

Yes, but I believe Nomura and the original writers saw the collaboration with Disney as potential to tell a story about the corruption of Disney from 1966-2000, its demonic influences and, the effects that had on culture, ideology and the idea of art as a whole. A big strong theme in the game is about how the franchization of art and the globalization of economy and internet affected the collective unconscious of the modern world; and also how it was being actively orchestrated.

Another layer is both phsychosexual and philosophical. Every single story beat in the opening AMV and first level (Destiny Islands) is designed to emasculate Sora and the player. The entire symbolism of the opening AMV and first level is as follows:

These symbolize masculinity and the urge to connect with others in a genuine way and through direct action, seeking god and the true light. In a few words, a Socratic view.

Idk about all that personally, but whatever they went for in the first game, they ramp it WAY the fuck up starting with Chain of Memories. Like even as a kid, I knew there was something fucked up about CoM and KH2, but I couldnt put to words what it was. The underlying message of CoM is like “you are your memories, which are malleable and formless”; Its a great line of inquiry that can be used for personal development, but the way it plays out in the game is fucking horrifying. Then you get to Roxas’s prologue in 2, and it’s like you’re watching the moments where a person unravels right before they die, like they’re being shown the DMT vision before death. It literally culminates into what is essentially Roxas coming to terms with his imminent death. I won’t say it fucked me up, but that prologue in particular left a lasting impression that’ll never go away
