Thank you. It makes a lot of my relationships complicated, even with those separate from family dynamics. One of the outcomes of these dishonest patterns has been how I’ll avoid connections due to concerns that I’m going to be in positions where I feel that lying is the only option and that it’ll end up wreaking havoc, as it tends to do. It’s usually easier to be solo.

Until meeting my husband and getting to know his family, I didn’t realize how unusual it was for mine to operate how they do. Growing up, it was exhausting keeping track of who told what to who — and this was stored as unconscious stress for years without even realizing it, thinking this was normal.

I hope I’ll be able to reverse enough of that wiring because it’s probably what made my cortisol shoot through the roof for years. The problem with excessive deceit is that it operates from a place of fear and while yes, there’s legitimate threats out there, many can be imagined or other solutions are often available.

Within that fear, other problems can arise in the form of, I guess, concealed consideration(?). When I’m faced with dilemmas where I can see how a partner/friend/family member knowing the truth about something would do them a disservice, I tend to reflexively warp information, even if it makes me look bad and won’t brainstorm alternatives. It’s as though I can see the domino effect that they aren’t able to and difficult choices have to be made (from my perspective). It’s resulted in me getting punched in the face, glared and screamed at, etc., but it hasn’t seemed to deter me much. It’s kind of like white lies, except taken too far, perhaps.

I’m not suggesting that I’m the martyr every scenario, but I especially struggle with compartmentalizing situations when that is more heavily the case because intentions easily become convoluted and shutting down is easier than dissecting.
