Interesting thread, something I've thought about recently. We need to see it as fake in order to exist comfortably, because it's not like we can go around as if Goku is our best friend. However, they're just reflections of the greater existence, for example Goku is in someway a reflection of Toriyama, it is entirely from his "essence" or "mind" or whatever you want to call it. There is absolutely no Goku without Toriyama. So the way Toriyama would not be as "real" as his initial creator is, but is still real for all intents and purposes, is the same as how Goku would not be "real". So how does this actually apply to what OP is asking? Well I think these characters COULD fall into something like a spirit or anima/animus space. I don't know exactly how far to take this, but one must question "why do I resonate with this character more than others?" and that's where you find the boundary where they become more "real".

It could potentially be made better if there's a happy ending or a moral lesson attached, but it's still not something that I'd trifle with carelessly.
