The samurai Budo is based on both and you can even see it in their modern Kendo.They receive New Year in Shinto temples, do the Daruma-san (a buddhist patriarch) eye painting for a wish, and other things. This western myth of "asians are smart and irreligious" should have died out now.
The Japanese are the way they are because each race has a particular over-soul, or general character that defines it. Their belief system is a manifestation of that, rather than the other way around.
