Its only happened to ne twice, and both times it was when I was asleep on my side, facing a wall and completely unable to move. I just "felt" like there was something else in the room with me and my brain was screaming at me to turn around, and trying to get me to scream, but my breath was only coming out like a whisper. It really is rather jarring being suddenly wide awake, filled with adrenaline to the point that you've a cold sweat, heart racing, and yet completely unable to move while you think something is lurking in the room with you just out of sight.
Horrible experience, that's about the best way I can describe it, I'm glad its never happened again.
