My advice in your situation, assuming you’re a writer who can knock out smaller pieces like poetry but wants to tackle a larger narrative, would be to allow yourself to write poems or short stories naturally as you already do and enjoy, but set them in the same “world” or reuse characters, themes, and ideas, almost like an anthology. Over time, once you feel you have enough, take stock and edit them together into a larger work. Once you’ve done that once or twice, you should have the knowledge and experience you need to tackle your pitfalls in a different light, know what you’d actually need to do to build the larger work and follow through, as well as more trust in the process and your natural rhythm. This isn’t to say you should never strive or try to evolve as an artist, but do things with the grain a few times before trying to go against the grain in pursuit of a quantum leap.
