So recently an old flame of mine, T, from last year broke up with the girl he ultimately chose to date instead of me. Yes, it does track. However, while we connect well, I wasn't aware that they viewed or felt like I'm someone they would want to keep around in the mid-to-long term. I have serious issues with intimacy. On paper I look ideal. I'm good-looking, on great shape, have a really interesting career. I've only had one real relationship and it ended a few years ago. Besides that it's always just been sex. I have a real avoidance of intimacy. Sex is "safer" when it's not actually leading to anything. Fucking unavailable men, for example. Think Michael Fassbender's character in the movie Shame. I don't know how to fix it or if I even want to sometimes.

When I was young, I wanted to be a teacher, but it turns out that only few people are actually fit for it. You’re one of those people. Either choice you make is actually great, for different reasons. Mainstream is easiest to address: you have the right demeanor and personality for education, and you would actually be treated well for your work. To us Americans, the idea of a good teacher being treated decently is wild, but there you go. The combination of knowledge and good youthful energy leads to you getting what you deserve. The Special ed line is more interesting. This isn’t just about career for you. Your heart has been pierced at some point by witnessing the challenges surrounding special needs, and you have been fixated on this ever since. This is my basic interpretation in absence of you saying you work there, but I’m guessing you’ve become moved emotionally towards them. The disparity between what you observe is typically done and what you wish would be done is felt, and you can’t shake that. Well, if you become and educator in that, you can feel like you’ve done a great deal to close that gap. The strange thing is that this reads a bit like a teaching job injecting a painkiller to numb the feeling of powerless over not being able to do more for them. To be more specific, it would solve the feeling of unease caused by what you’ve experienced and observed, because your actions would allow you to feel like love can fix many things. Fair warning, this doesn’t mention anything about your outcomes past moving past this particular hangup.
