It seems to me as if historical Catholicism and Orthodoxy encountered some mystical streams that hadn't been fully fleshed out yet. For example, it seems strange to me that they would liken encounters with God's feminine aspect with Mary, considering that Sophia or the Holy Spirit would make much more sense from a purely apostolic and biblical perspective.
