I shot at one once with a 38 revolver inside my house, but the gun did not go off. I guess I'm lucky in that regard I would probably have bad tinnitus or worse. It was a grey looking alien but instead of grey skin it had dark purple reddish looking skin, but was still light color. The dark purple seemed to be mostly blood vessels which were prominently visible all over its body.

There's not much to say. As a child I had several encounters and I developed a phobia of grey aliens as a result to the point I couldn't even look at pictures of them I'd get horrible chills. After like age 9 it really slowed down and eventually I got over the phobia and I basically had no incidents for years. Only a handful of experiences in the next 20 years til now and that failed shooting incident was a year or two ago.
I basically dozed off with the lights and TV on. I woke up and my dog stayed asleep in my bed and the bedroom door was slightly ajar and it's really dark since only my bedroom light is on. I don't know if I heard noise or why, but I had the instinct to grab my pistol off my dresser in my closet then I crawled on my bed again against the wall pointing it at the door. My bed is against the wall right next to the door so I was probably a yard away when I saw the alien in the darkness through the opening. It stepped into the light and I saw its face and skin which is the most detailed I've ever seen. Pulled the trigger once and nothing happened but I vaguely remember the alien leaving, although I doubt I'd be able to sleep after that so either like you say I fell into some trance or it could have been a dream? I did think to myself as it was happening "This isn't a dream" to sort of ground myself since I've had false awakenings often enough that it's a habit to check if I'm dreaming in that kind of situation.
To me i had to have been awake since I checked myself, but the gun not going off is strange. I shot it later with the same rounds in it and they all went off just fine.
Maybe it was an unlucky weak pin hit or the alien somehow stopped the firing pin or the primer on the bullet which is goofy to think about lol. Because the hammer definitely cocked and slammed down fine. I didn't think to check the bullet for a weak primer hit afterwards since I didn't know about that at the time.
