ITT: Shit from your childhood that was retconned / doesn't exist anymore
>Be me, ~8-9 years old
>In garden with parents
>GIANT fucking insect lands on my arm, the size of my entire forearm at the time
>I scream cry etc, it flies off
>Parents console me and say it is a "box fly", and that is is harmless
>[time warp]
>Randomly remember this as an adult and ask them about it, they have no idea
To this day I have never seen an insect like it or anything on wtf a "box fly" is supposed to be. And no it wasn't a "botfly".

Anyone else have stories like this? They really interest me. I have a few more but they aren't as weird as this one.

This reminds me of something that happened during the 2017 solar eclipse in the US, literally during the eclipse. I was watching it in a friend's backyard with them and a giant (at least 3-4 inches long) orange insect with a huge stinger(?) started flying at me and trying to land on my back. I didn't actually get stung though and they got it off me somehow. They had no idea what it was and neither did I, and I feel like it was something weird since I don't remember any other insect encounters from that long ago

not to be an asshole but
>be a child
>be literally 1/2-1/4 your current adult size
>wonder why kinda big insects seem like fuck off huge man eaters
>"mmmh yes my reality changed I didn't just grow up"

>>
>>42158833
I know what you mean, but when I was thinking about it deeper it's still really weird to me. Even now it would still be far larger than any common insect I've known, like easily 5-10x larger. It also looked extremely strange and that's why I remember "box fly" - it was like rectangular when it's wings were curled up. Again you'd have to see my memories to fully know what I am talking about, it was super bizarre. Unlike anything I have seen since.
Of course it could have just been a nightmare, overactive imagination, etc. But this is /x/.

Can you try to draw a picture of one in paint?

I tried but made the worst drawing ever. Note I cannot usually even draw a stick figure, so this doesn't do it justice. When it was in the air, but was much less 'rectangular' but when it landed, it's wings and legs or whatever else sort of folded up.
>>
>>42158874 (me)*
Meant to say: When it was in the air, it was much less 'rectangular', but when it landed, it's wings and legs or whatever else sort of folded up.

It’s not a mosquito hawk? Those things are insane looking.

I guess it could have been what we have here, we call them crane flies. Still it's much different than what I remember. What I saw was very dark colored, maybe even black. And obviously way bigger. But ye the rational explanation could have been that it was a crane fly and my kid brain made up this horror scenario
>>
I live in western europe and I swear I saw a MASSIVE crane fly when i was around 7-8 years old. I'm not sure about the exact scale but it would've been very close to what you're describing. Probably around 30cm including the legs. It was just resting on a wall.
>>
>>42158889
That said there’s tons of weird bugs. I saw a weird fly in my yard just the other day and it took me almost an hour to find it online because it doesn’t typically visit my area. Could have been some weird rare bug. It’s a shame actual bug experts or fanatics are so rare.

Timelines have to be interesting to God or they get merged with other timelines, most natural timelines that ended in nuclear war and desolation get merged into this one where things are interesting, so all kinds of random small differences are noticed by the merged

Was it a dragonfly?

Insects are crazy though. Prehistoric insects were like the air version of deep sea horror creatures.
Then among all that crazy shit you have humans, who are totally different. Really weird.
>>
I swear I remember seeing big dragonflies as a kid. Like bird sized ones.

Yeah I've got one for you. When I was 12 I pissed myself in class and ran to the toilet. I simply have no memory of what happened after, and nobody commented on it. Ran to the toilet then just... Nothing. Didn't happen.

So it was kinda like a crane fly but much bigger and with a mantis head? How did it fly? Like the average insect or dud it kinda bob up and down?

>>42158818

Was it a cowkiller/velvet ant(wasp)? Sounds somewhat similar.

>>42161505

I remember seeing a caterpillar that reminded me of a clown. Not that big like maybe an inch to and inch and a half. But it definitely vibe like a clown, even had a little red 'nose'. I do not think it had a humanoid head, but it was still rather weird. I was in the single digits at the time. I looked it up, and no real caterpillar looked like it, closest I could find was picrel, but the head was much less cartoony and it was mostly black and white.

I also remember seeing a daddy long legs/harvestman in the single digits that looked kinda off, like the body had like kinda blue large eyes or something. Kinda scared me desu, and I was never one to be scared of creepy crawlies.

except he didn't really grow up as he hasn't even thought maybe his parents are not all knowing authority figures and most likely just made something up to stop him from crying
>>
>>42161642

Possible, but I assume if this were the case the parents would have been more freaked out.

>So it was kinda like a crane fly but much bigger and with a mantis head? How did it fly? Like the average insect or dud it kinda bob up and down?
I didn't get a good look at it when flying. It was very fast though
>except he didn't really grow up as he hasn't even thought maybe his parents are not all knowing authority figures and most likely just made something up to stop him from crying
This is really stupid logic. Are you trying to say some sort of giant insect really did land on me and they were like "wtf quick make something up"? Or that it's like some other trauma and somehow they could use that to divert? Makes zero sense to me

Size-wise this would match perfectly to what I saw! The wings also look a lot like what I remember. The body / 'torso' from that perspective matches what I saw. Large, elongated, and vaguely rectangular.
Although I remember it's head being flat/no extruding bits apart from possibly antennae - no mandibles. And it was very dark colored, or black.

I found an image of one that is even closer to what I remember. Apparently a species from Asia? I am in ausfailia

>>42161739
The females of the species also lack the extended mandibles.
>>
>>42161748
Holy shit then it might be a female version of that pic then. Can't say I've seen one since. So this random rare as fuck (to my experience) insect just trolled me as a kid lol

It does look kind of a similar orange color, but I am in WA. Wikipedia says that isn't their range, but maybe it was.
>>
Its not really related to OP, but I recall last year I saw what I believe to be a new or unknown subspecies of the American Carrion Beetle, because every pic I found seem to have the spot on their back that is more of a messy ink spot, while those I found had this distinct and surreal looking eye on their thorax, with a clear white and black contrast. Pic related, the whole reason I even saw them while walking in the underbrush was because their image outright triggered a reflex from me, because I was really confused as to why there were a bunch of eyes all of a sudden.

> the whole reason I even saw them while walking in the underbrush was because their image outright triggered a reflex from me
Maybe even an adaptation to make animals not step on them? If you see eyes peeking out of the ground, you'd be freaked out (whether as a human or a dog / whatever else)

There's been times I met up with people that I thought were dead. Probably just a misunderstanding, it's not like I was at their funeral or anything.

>>
>>42158789
actually shit no the size doesn't match at all, I do remember 'box fly' being a type of fly that looked like a horsefly. I'm guessing you're thinking of another flying insect that isn't a fly but is commonly mistaken for a fly? I'd guess a very large dragonfly. I remember seeing a huge purple dragon fly, maybe 6-8 inches that followed me around the garden for a good 10 minutes. Looking now at photos, they don't seem that big, but I (Even at 8) remember that modest garden to be fucking huge. Idk man

Sometimes I have the feeling that I wake up in a different reality, not enough to be whole different world but small changes that seems off.
Something like, in the infinite amount of realities many of them are practically the same but with some changes that make me think I'm not in the same world I used to be.
