He spread the Sauronic hatred, thinking he would become more powerful if he did so. But Sauron does not share power. He wants it all for himself, in his dark fortress in the desert of Mordor. Not knowing it himself, Saruman was a puppet of Sauron, An instrument of war. A tool. Cannon fodder for the dark lord. He betrayed the free peoples of Middle-earth, for power. He betrayed his Order, by becoming just like the enemy he was sent to defeat.
