Most clergy are subject to pretty strict investigations and Churches do a lot to to insulate Priests from the public (mostly to protect the Church from future lawsuits and payouts). It's pretty hard for a Priest to step outside the lines. In past times, you'd have to specify. There has been a number of political movements in the Church and the politics of each epoch of the Church has been radically different between them.
