since the movie is coming out soon, lets have a general Backrooms discussion thread.
Question to get started: Do levels ruin the concept? I like there being different types of rooms but they should all lead back to the yellow walls, that should be the focal point.

Post Modernist architecture has always just given us a sense of dread. To seem them ages and empty just intensifies it. To see them stretch on in nightmarish directions brings to mind the mazes behavioral scientists would make mice run.
This whole pomo world has been a psychological conditioning tool.

In the film, when they find out who built it, they should go Purge on them

If humans were not so damn stupid as to build backrooms, maybe they would have back-gardens instead?

it's not humans, it's leftover assets from the simulation / a dev test map

This is the gayest fucking shit ever to come from this website

yah bro! i need it to be a loud big scary gorey rape monster or my needle isn't moved bro.
the concepts of slowing starving or being in an unknown purgatory are too deep for my fist brain

it's the labyrinth, and the "stick figure" scribble monster in current backrooms lore, is the minotaur. there's legends of someone using a red string and a key was involved somehow, and it's possible the backrooms / labyrinth could be used for fast travel.
it seems to be some kind of buffer zone and no one's really supposed to be in there. that's why there's a minotaur, probably multiple, to keep people out.

Which is a footnote in House Of Leaves

i could never quite finish that book. i tried twice. it's too long and mazelike for my abilities.

Took me 3 tries but it was worth it. It's a great book.

As for the monsters in kane's backrooms I think they are more complicated than just trying to keep people out. I think they are trying to assimilate people into the backrooms and if they are caught by the monster or die in there their memories of the real world get absorbed into the backrooms. But because it absorbs memories and not how things actually were it becomes distorted.

That's why later in the series the backrooms has changed and has more things from our world while also being incredibly off. In the trailer it's even said that it doesn't build it "remembers".

There's more to it than that ofc, i think time plays a significant role in the backrooms, even more than space.

To be honest, to me, there hasn't been a good Backroom movie yet. There are a few short films on YouTube about it. But to really accomplish the Backrooms as a film, you have to acknowledge the stark and sheer loneliness of the backrooms. Walking around in massive, soulless environments without any people or animals for hours almost like as in a dream, but it's real life. The stark and sheer loneliness of knowing you might not be able to get out.

Because there might not be one.

>no one attempts to find hollow voids, or test how sturdy the walls are, or cieling crawlspaces, or marks their path

I liked the way Nocturne did it (before the Backrooms post).
It's an area that exists outside of the physical universe. They're called Kalpa (a measure of time) or the Amala Labyrinth and at the end of each section, Lucifer reveals to the main character more details about the universe and God.

And the deeper you go, the more it begins to rot.
