An addiction is usually a coping mechanism for something else, especially masturbation as its easy to do and free. Its the same overall premise for people that indulge in bad foods to much or gambling or any other form of coping mechanism. Like all things in moderation they're fine, but these people have something empty in themselves they want to fill and by doing to much of this stuff is their only way to feel good, hence the addiction. Cooming especially can put you into a crazy esotric state, the kind of real long edge goon sesh that when you're done you think "wtf was I even jerking to that's disgusting". If you don't realize the addiction you start to mistake these super horny thoughts as your own thoughts and think you want something you don't. Not a particularly easy fix though. Saying "just find more joy" without just replacing the addiction isn't easy. But at least hopefully you can try help the guy understand why he does it so much before it makes him go to far and do something he regrets. Try and make him see that the greatest life ever would have him barely wanting to fap at all, and hopefully he begins to try and chase after that life instead of just fapping.
