They make a bunch of sounds with their throat which your brain then picks up through your ear, recognizes the pattern, then interprets it into a word. It has to undergo this sort of micro translation and parse the information into something comprehensible before you actually understand what it means. In this sense I guess you could see speech as some weird kind of pattern recognition, you're really just speaking patterns to people. And if language is just patterns, wouldn't that also make anything else that has patterns a language as well? Bird mating calls are patterns for instance, it's just the same repeated sound over and over again, you could call it a language. What about music? There are patterns in music, maybe this why people say the music "speaks" to them. Music could be a sort of cosmic language that we've all tapped into, who knows. What about accents? People who speak the same word, but the sound pattern is slightly different so you pick up on it. What about when you can feel emotions behind the words? You're probably right, it is some kind of barrier because naturally you wouldn't try to constrict all your emotions/feelings into a language, you'd allow it to just flow normally. Someone who grew up without learning a language wouldn't try to explain away the things happening in their head, they'd just 'feel' it and be in tune with it, rather than trying to condense it all down into something. Trying to explain things that can't be explained with words, that's the true cage.
