I think what’s going on is that since the FDA requires medications to be more effective than placebo but does not specify how much more effective, pharmaceutical companies just come up with drugs that have a ton of side effects so that they appear more effective than placebo in the studies because people know whether they’re on the real drug, and maybe 1 in 20 people coincidentally getting a side effect that’s good. This makes a lot of money for pharmaceutical industry so the goverment is happy to let it continue in the name of the economy, and for depression in particular the government and corporations who run it have a vested interest in telling people that their misery is caused by chemical imbalances in their brains rather than a corrupt society which should be overthrown.
