I think I have a good explanation for the atmosphere OP. So remember from Physics when you throw an object in the air it gradually exchanges its kinetic energy for gravitational potential energy and then the inverse after it reaches the peak of its trajectory? The average speed of an air molecule is something like 1000mph, but of course there is a distribution of speeds, with the high and low ends being exponentially more uncommon. So if you think about it, only a small portion of the atmospheric molecules are moving fast enough for their parabola's top to reach 20 miles, and proportionally even less are moving fast enough to reach 60 miles or the edge of space. To be lost the atmospheric molecules would have a high enough speed to overcome earth's escape velocity (which is the velocity where you move fast enough that earth's constant (but fading with distance) gravitational pull on you is never enough to bring you back). An internet search says Earth's escape velocity is 25000mph, which would make the percent of the atmosphere that escapes earth practically zero even for many millions of years.
