Do you think it's possible to lose passionate drives (love, hate, resentment, fury, etc) and to become a purely rational actor? I don't mean to lose emotion entirely, just the irrational motivators. If so, how can I do this to myself? If you are already in this state, what do you think causes it and what is it like?
If that's too much to ask for, at the very least I just need something related to this topic so that I know where to proceed from here.
>>42303699Anyone that gives you an image of them being unemotional and 'enlightened' are full of shit 100% of the time. The mask shows here and there when they go on about ego death but mention shit like 'humans are the most advanced and interesting species in the universe' like that's arrogant and conceited lmao.Real answer: nicotine dulls your emotions
>>42303699Read all of Plato's work from the point of view that he is a massive fucking shitposter and every sentence has about 15 layers of inside jokes and references that only make sense if you go all the way back to the source material and study the ways of life at the time and before. basically, learn greek.
>>42303754yeah you're probably right about the first part. nicotine is a good answer, though of course the tolerance makes that non viable as a permanent state. also to reiterate i absolutely do want emotions, i just want to not feel blind passions.>>42303767that's a very interesting interpretation of plato, i am already reading him (but in english, i've never been committed enough to master a language). is there anyone who goes into depth about this view of socrates?
>>42303785I think Plato might have invented a lot more than we can appreciate and I think you might come to believe the same if you learn ancient greek and context of the time.
The internal drive, wot r sum external drivers that trigger the emotional response from the mental apparatus you govern regardless of just.As above so below.
>>42303699Just slice up your brain using that service Sam Altman signed up for, they'll digitise your mind and someone will instance you in future Roblox/Garry's mod, over and over again.
>>42303699That eye looks like it belongs to a beautiful yet dangerous woman I'd marry and be with until death do us part, and maybe even beyond that.
>>42303699I think meditating a lot could be a solution for that. It helps you observe your emotions without being controlled by them. You still feel everything but you stop acting like a slave to your passions.
>>42303767>learn greekThey didn't write modern Greek it's ancient koine Greek which I've always wanted to learn myself. Tons of our English words have Greek origin
>>42303699No.Reaction to the death of friend or the impending one for oneself is a clear test of emotion. Living things feel this pressure unanimously and emotions are rationallu derived for a living thing in order to live a life dealing with subjective losses and gains they attach themselves to. It would appear to be irrational objectively. However, not everyone can be the curious invisible passing by who don't feel the impact at all to observe objectively. Usually, observation is also observed back in social senario and asking for an answer is first acknowledged, and that acknowledgement creates an effect already. Stealth probing is possible but most people achieve that level of stealth for unrightful gains that will be felt. After that, less than immediate impact doesn't mean it wouldn't be felt indirectly, accumulated, and happen again. Then the interest of the curious is to imagine what if some scenario were to happend to them, which usually starts from identification of some similarity. Lastly, not everything is recorded by an objective observer, especially hidden states and unspoken words. Without using subjective experiences, these keys are often ignored.Even a psycho would feel something emotional during his tormoil and impending death. A normalfag finds comfort and dignity in someone else acknowledging his situation even if nothing can be done because he left a part of him in someone else's mind. Knowing nothing can be done for him and acknowledgment meant nothing of substance, a psycho spent their dying moment in pure isolated agony and refusal as all their eggs are on this final basket. Psycho's inability to counsel this fact leads them to build strict hierachy in society and race to the top where they think dignity can be found. If you want to excercise both ratioanlity and emotion, the best thing is to be an witness, judge and counsel for other people's business, which means first sort your own shit out before hours of socialization to get in.
>>42304231I said basically, and I said source material. there aren't a lot of dots left to connect there brainlet.
>>42304231Plato didn’t write or speak in Koine. He wrote in Attic. Koine emerged as a widespread dialect after Alexander, based on Attic, Ionain, and a couple other minor dialects. There is a difference between classical Attic and Koine, mostly in vocabulary and vowels, even though they are mostly mutually intelligable. If you want to “erm ackshually” someone be accurate about it, though you are correct that a modern greek speaker would have difficulty sight-reading either classical Attic or Koine
>>42303699>If you are already in this state, what do you think causes it and what is it like?First of all, if you have to ask that question, you are not meant to lose your drive for passion, so don't even bother with being purely rational. By asking the question, you have immediately failed to qualify.A purely rational actor stays this way because the stakes are high and there is zero margin for error. Because of this, everything that increases this margin of error dies on the spot in favor of the outcome. You are constantly working to forecast the future, and you become extremely good at it. You live 18-24 months ahead, because humans don't think this far ahead even at the 99.999th percentile. This will alienate you from those who live day-by-day, which is damn near everyone. So no, you don't want to be this way. I temper this by accepting nearly every offer to go out on social events, even if I know I'm totally disinterested. I usually end up being the one helping the host in the kitchen by being a plug-and-play assistant to their processes, so they can actually entertain their guests.
>>42304555I'd agree on your basis that emotions feed into rational calculus. There is a study by Antonio Damasio that seems to prove this through a man he called "Elliot." With damage to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, the link between high-level reasoning and emotional gut feelings have been severed. The end result? He could never make a single choice, stuck in an endless loop of comparisons but zero urge to commit to a decision (which is emotional).Rationality alone cannot drive a human being. If reason is the machine, emotions drive intent to where this machine takes them. The best takeaway from OP's perspective is that OP likely feels emotionally overwhelmed in some way. This is just a normal signal of having too many conflicting intentions pulling them apart. The best approach isn't to shun every emotion and become a machine. This is impossible. The best course of action is to evaluate the past, present and future.>pastWhat happened that led to the present?>presentWhat is the current situation that has to be dealt with?>futureWhat is the desired outcome, and why should OP reorient towards there (why should they care)All of those will require emotional input to move forward, even with rational calculus.
>>42304178>You still feel everything but you stop acting like a slave to your passions.I have an alternative suggestion to that. It is medatative, but lacks the spiritual context, which OP can find on their own.I've stated previously on attaining the "what", "so what", and "now what". OP needs to find out what's within their control and personal influence to change in their lives. This is where they must start. The better control and stability they have in their life by changing the things they can control for the better, the more stability they will attain, as well as increasing the scope of their influence around them. OP does not have to give up their emotions. It is the drive that keeps them going, and if they're emotional, leverage that strong drive but just remember to think about where they want to be.The actual question isn't, "How do I suppress my emotions and become rational." The more likely question is, "How do I attain self agency for myself?"
>>42303699To lose some or most, yeah, beyond that IDC. >How can I...No idea but think twice. Not being able to smile or smile back sucks. Work on your feelings, don't jettison them.>Causes and what it's likeFor me: burnout and apathy.Flat and gray all day.
