Let's discuss this drawing of Baphomet (titled "Goat of the Sabbath")The artist, Eliphas Levi Zahed (born Alphonse Louis Constant) reveals this drawing in "Transcendental Magick: Doctrine and Ritual" and discusses it in Chapter XV, "The Sabbath of the Sorcerers" (note the number of the Tarot Devil).At first glance, it is, of course, the Devil. Levi associates this with the Egyptian Typhon, the Serpent of the Hebrews, so on and so forth. Levi, however, refines this as being Pan, which provides an older and immediate doctrine of the Left Hand Path and Transcendentalism: that the Devil appears as the mad God, the liberated one, who has accomplished the full consumption of matter. I like to compare this to the jet black skin of the Hindu's gods, having absorbed all light, all terrors and horrors. It's curious to note that therefore in the Hindu system, there is no "the Devil" that embodies evil itself and contests God, but rather symbols of veils upon essential reality: illusion, ego, vice, ignorance.There is of course much takeaway besides Pan in the goat symbol: goats are mentioned in the Bible - one for consecration, and another for sin, to which all of the sins of God's country are to be confessed and sent away. Both are pure in their own respect. This androgyne / dualistic nature continues throughout this symbol (though, Levi took it to solely be the sinful goat). Levi goes on to explain that the three Alchemical Primes: Salt, Mercury, and Sulphur, are symbolized by the bull (perhaps the sacred bull Apis), the dog (Hermanubis), and the goat (Pan, the sexually promiscuous). Sulphur is of course the Fiery Prime, and the crown of the drawing - the torch itself is of three prongs, as is it with the horns, resembling the Hebrew Shin, Qabalistically corresponding to both fire and spirit. The character Shin is a glyph of a sharp tooth, consumption and destruction - this almost suggests the function of Pan or the Devil as earlier, to indiscriminately consume.

Another doctrine appears here in the symbol of the pentagram, which was well-discovered by recent advances in Magick. It used to be that the single point above the four were spirit's triumph over matter, and the averse was of course matter's triumph, taken to be evil. However, it can be taken now that the former represents Spirit's equilibrium, poised above the four elements, and the latter is rather a sacrament, the voluntary descent of spirit into matter, vivifying it, and allowing for experience (as in incarnation). Baphomet bears the former, being the Holy Spirit itself, but the modern symbol of Satanism takes on the latter. The four elements appear in Baphomet's body as the bestial legs, the fishscaled abdomen, the angel's torso, and the flame above: this layout mirrors the medieval sciences' conception of the world, with earthy land, water gathered upon it, the atmosphere of air, and the fiery heavens.

Solve appears to be the indrawing, pointing up, and Coagula the manifestation, pointing down - towards the Spiritual, and towards the Physical. Perhaps the most curious part of this whole depiction is that his right hand is raised to Chesed, and his left to Geburah, as the Tree of Life corresponds these oppositely; performing the Sign of Cross, the Lord's Prayer, the Qabalistic Cross, etc. on oneself in any system or age confirms this. Now, Levi was well aware (in this very book) that Severity corresponded to the right shoulder, and Mercy to the left, yet chose to take this particular liberty. The simple explanation is to say that it had to be the upraising of Mercy and handing-out of Severity, and that the rest is plain swapping of dualities to represent some sort of a consummation, but this is dismissive; symbol should always be followed to its furthest end. To dig deeper, and rather gather the symbols, it may be that the counterchange between Chesed and Geburah do not display their actual positions, but the direction they have taken. By the destructive heat of Severity (right hand), one is uplifted from the base by its dissolution, and attains to Mercy, whilst by the bestowal of Mercy (left hand), one forms matter as a sort of coagulation, and attains to Severity. It is interesting that the path connecting these two Sephiroth on the Tree of Life is Teth, the Serpent, and its Tarot Key "Lust."
