I'm willing to bet he could live with it just fine when he was a little younger, felt much better, had prospects in front of him rather than failures behind him, and such. Now he's facing down the real costs of things like chronic illness and death in America. I never made my identity based around things that simply aren't possible. But I feel bad for anyone like that dude. They're so misled by the need for spectacle. Reality is so much more mundane and boring. Myth is only real in the way batman is real. You'll never find him out in the world because he's made up. But the stories around him can feel true because they brush against the same questions and patterns we all brush against in life. Sucks having your hope crushed but it's a necessary function to get to the truth of things. Some just can't hold that. Whatever health issues he may have had I think are secondary to the motivation. Living in fear of death can be overcome. That's much harder compounded with your identity dissolving. Death awaits at both doors.
