I have finally received my mail-ordered Rider-Waite deck, currently looking through the materials in the opening post. Someone else also recommended me a book called Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack, is it any good? I'd also appreciate any advice for beginners, I've never touched anything divination-related before.

>>42332469I would recommend first just getting your bearings with the absolute basics. Just my opinion as one person who reads tarot. 78 Degrees of Wisdom is great but the author is quite into Kabbalah and goes very in depth into all the deep symbolism of the artwork. This is great but it can wait I think, unless you are using tarot primarily as a way of deepening a practice of hermetics/western Magick. In which case I would point you to the Order of the Golden Dawn of the Builders of the Adytum- honestly it's been so long since I was in that world I can't help you much there. I did have a copy of The Pictorial Key of the Tarot which is written by one of the people who developed the Rider-Waite (namely, Waite). This is good but very old school. Tarot readings has changed and gone through trends. And again, in my opinion, this is better read after learning the standard modern meanings. But it's definitely nice and important to pair modern meanings with their intended, traditional, occult symbols.Just learn, generally, what most current readers associate with each card. Like, "The Fool represents new beginnings". Learn the major arcana first, then the suits, then each minor arcana. So many resources online for this, find multiple websites and compare their meanings and get the gist. Then, when you return to the classic material, you will have a basic foundation to dive off from.Some tarot resources are just weird. The booklet that came with my deck says stuff like The Queen of Cups represents blonde women and the Queen of Pents is women with dark skin, or that the Four of Cups represents unpaid debts, or whatever. Just weird little hyper-specific card associations that aren't really used by most readers. Ultimately, there is no authority on "what the cards mean", and your intuition can guide you to unique meanings, but when reading in /div/ for example, if you went really rogue on a meaning, people will find that odd.

>>42332469If I were an absolute beginner, I would start by pulling up two or more online resources or handbooks, and I would separate out the major arcana from the minor. I would ask a simple question (e.g. "What is some advice for today?"), prayerfully, calmly. Then I would shuffle my majors and count to ten. One of the hard things is knowing when to stop shuffling- you can develop your own way of "knowing" as you go. Pull the top card or a card that's looking like it wants to be pulled. Take a look and have a guess what it means- then compare your immediate gut vibe with the meanings from your resources. Think hard about how that applies to your question, maybe write down your thoughts. Then say thank you. Repeat each day, or with different questions. Once your major are mastered, you can start with the minor arcana mixed in. If you choose to (as most do), you can also begin to learn a system for reading reversals. I no longer read reversals but it's definitiely good to know how so you can decide for yourself if it's your style.As you are doing this memorisation work, you can read about broader tarot ideas, like the Fool's Journey, hermetic/occult symbolism, the elements of the suits, the numerological aspects, and weave that in to your interpretations. It's a lot of info to learn so it's best to just let it take a long time and slowly build and deepen and get more enriched. Once you feel pretty steady with all 78 cards, you could practise on /div/ or with friends. This really helps! But practise spiritual hygiene when reading for others, especially strangers.Ultimately the way you read will be unique and will develop as you go. Try and enjoy it and thank your spirit guides, angels, God, the Universe for their help when you are helped or help others, and to protect you from any negative interference.
