This is something I've been looking into for a while now actually, and I'd love to parse a few of my thoughts on this phenomenon. If Aliens are real, and I mean genuinely real. Why is it through many abduction accounts from the first throws back in the late 40s and early 50s to today the distance of the ET species shifts/extends further out to fit our current world view. Why is it, a hyper advanced race of aliens wishes to kidnap and torture people on our planet. There are reports of there being some Galactic Federation, and yet some rogue sect of alien intelligence has carte blanche to harass a 'primitive species' because IDK, they're malevolent. How can a species get to the point of FTL travel, they treat us poorly, harass/torture, and yet they were able to escape their own planet. That planet would have been an ecological dead end before they even knew how to produce satellites if they're experimenting on lesser species. Some Galactic Federation they are if they can't handle a small group of rogue aliens that cause trouble, but let's further lean into this angle. In every recorded case of UFO sightings where a craft is seen landing (Not including numerous eye-witness reports) the people who see the craft are always urged to investigate, and see something. It comes off as theater to me, a calculated play, a psy-op of the mind to make someone feel special, or enthrall them. Let's take it a step further, on cases where numerous people see a craft, there are reports of people seeing something different, same location, same time, but small discrepancies. With all of the sightings, why would an FTL able species not have uniform shipcraft, instead it's always some weird shape, and it's rarely the SAME shape. How can a hyper advanced speices/Federation exist if there is no substance to chew on, no politics, tell the most bumbfuck nobody about it, make them feel special, and BOOM then what? Oh my god, we've known about demons for millenias. It's one of the oldest and widest documented phenomena in human cultural milieu! It isn't some dark secret. Hell, you can contact them right now! Do the silly rituals, say the funny words.
