The past (80s-90s) was intentionally better/more pleasant than the present. The culture was still firmly under the control of the evil rich people™ but they allowed a little enjoyment for the hoi polloi. I think this was intentional for 2 reasons. Powerful people generally tend to work. They just have more expensive things, better access to things and better lives. The rich fucked up though. They did something they would never do themselves. And it is generationaly a bad thing for them as the populace is more educated than ever.
