Esoteric describes knowledge, literature, or activities understood by or intended for only a small, specialized group with niche interests or secret knowledge. Understanding this is the first step. If you get secret knowledge then this gives you power. If, somehow, you get secret knowledge about how the universe operates or works then you can use that knowledge and apply it. If you apply it you are messing with God's creation. If you mess with God's creation He takes it personally. Secret knowledge gives us the capacity to understand and transcend reality. It's like this, it's like if you get superpowers. God doesn't want us having superpowers because if you do then you break the game.
I like the gnostic interpertation. That being, secret knowledge exposing the material world for a lie, and the God of this world being an imperfect entity keeping divinity trapped. I believe enlightenment is what frees divinity and consequently kills the demiurge, hence his whole thing about keeping you tied to material reality.
