I don't think it's really fair to judge his character based on secondhand accounts unless he was like a convicted criminal that committed some vicious crime. Especially considering the context. Stories about him were wildly exaggerated, both by others and himself. The truth is probably something really boring and what you'd expect if you're thinking straight, but most people that are into this stuff aren't really thinking straight to begin with.I think the most inspirational thing that he did was finding patterns and correspondences that all the different esoteric systems shared and then writing about it. That's comparable to the work that Joseph Campbell did when he wrote Hero With A Thousand Faces, showing the correspondences between different folklores and mythologies that are likely due to universal psychological conditions talked about by Carl Jung. I find that stuff very fascinating.But other than that, "Thelema" is pretty much just chaos magick, and Aliester Crowley is basically a crackpot who did it all for the social status and the wealth and of course, the sex.
