My cat consistently ignores one-word calls or psspsspss or baby-babble, but she seems to understand exactly (and respond accordingly) when I speak to her in complete sentences as if talking to a child. She understands better when I use proper English grammar without the inflections and raised pitch.

I think she gets the memo telepathically. So when I go psspsspss she’s thinking
>ok dude, whatever
but when I go “Calm yourself girl, those are just the landscapers, they’re not gonna hurt you,” she’s thinking
>Oh ok, good to know

Not that cats know the English language, but that sending a telepathic impression (naturally, during normal speech) as a complete sentence actually conveys way more information that a cat can understand in their own interpretive way. The cat hears the psspsspss too, but it literally doesn’t mean anything, that’s why she doesn’t react.

my dog used to go and sit by the front door whenever my sister was 5 minutes away from home. and before you say it... she worked random hours, so the dog wasnt just sitting there at the same time every day.

no shit, it was so accurate, that my mum would put my sisters dinner in the oven when she saw the dog go and sit by the door.

THE DOG FUCKING KNEW

god i miss her. bonnie. she was beautiful.

cats and dogs perfectly understand human language , they just don´t have the mouths/tongue apparatus to talk back and if they do it´s only a few words.
my brothers dog talks and can say yes or no , mostly mumbles but completely different to barking.

Dog's can recognize the sounds of specific car engines and associate that with a person. My dad's dog could tell when I was about to arrive and would get excited according to my dad and his wife. I drove a pretty unique sounding vintage car at the time.
