Thoughts on this movie? Are there any deeper meanings that I missed? I have a feeling that the movie is hiding some deeper message behind all of the time travel stuff
>>

Quick rundown:
>Donnie = Donald Trump
>Darko = Dark-O, which represents an eclipse (Trump was born during a lunar eclipse)
>Donnie mentions that "a storm is coming" several times during the movie

The storm in the movie is associated with time travel and completion of a time loop. Probably means that we have been living in Trump's dream this whole time, and when he dies the timeline will reset to the "correct" path or something like that. There's also some blatant symbolism with the rabbit dude and him getting shot in the right eye, though I'm not quite prepared to speak on what that exactly represents. I can give a cursory take on it, though:

>rabbits are associated with the moon in asian mythology
>pic related is a famous still from "A Trip to the Moon" (french silent film from 1902) showing the moons right eye being "shot"
>the right eye symbolism has a lot of meanings but it seems like it mainly references Zecheriah 11:17 in the bible: "Woe to the idol shepherd that leaveth the flock! The sword shall be upon his arm, and upon his right eye: his arm shall be clean dried up, and his right eye shall be utterly darkened."

Not related to Donnie Darko, but...... that last part I mentioned with the bible verse also relates to Berserk. Guts gets blinded in his right eye and gets part of his arm cut off, and this all happens during an ECLIPSE

The airplane go brrrrr

The film is a gnostic allegory that also touches on themes of free will and presdestination. There's humour and quasi-political commentary throughout too.

I have watched this movie multiple times and am going to give this a stab.

If you watch the Director’s cut you get more context. When the plane wormhole portal occurred and the turbine fell through the house in the beginning of the movie, a splinter-timeline was generated due to the fact that Donnie escaped death. From this point on in the movie, Donnie’s character becomes more acquainted with Frank- the six foot tall bunny rabbit. Since Frank is originally the one who “saved” Donnie from death in the beginning, he (Frank) becomes Donnie’s “angel” in the new timeline. So Donnie is obliged to follow Frank’s directives (flooding the school, staining the pedophile’s house, etc) as Frank saved him.

The reason Frank is a “rabbit” is a bit more nuanced. From Donnie’s POV- he was “saved” by Frank. But from the POV of the original timeline- Donnie died when the turbine crashed into his house. So most of the story (splinter-timeline) takes place in the underworld (Alice follows the white rabbit down the rabbit hole into wonderland- which is underground, the underworld). This is why in literature class- the class is reading/watching Watership down where “ Fiver, a runty young rabbit who is a seer, receives a frightening vision of his warren's imminent destruction.” If you listen to “Donnie’s poem” he recites, the parallel is striking. Donnie is linked to the new parallel timeline where it only exists because he is alive- therefore in order to save all of the other characters (from Donnie’s POV), Donnie must die.

Donnie kills Frank at the end fulfilling his fate and with his Angel gone (and his girl), Donnie accepts his destiny and closes the splinter-timeline, reverting back to the original timeline in his bed where he meets his own death.

Admittedly, I’m a little unsure about my perception of the last part- but that’s my effort post for today

I think the main premise of the movie is that the main female girl character was better off never knowing Donnie in the first place. Just like how God made a mistake by creating humans or at least a specific group of them.

Perfect example of film being a collaborative process and that sometimes the original conception by the artist isn't the best version.

Theatrical cut is vastly superior to the Director's Cut, and is more surreal.

Donnie steps out of time when the airplane engine doesn't kill him. He gets to live an alternate life in a parallel timeline and he gets to see behind the curtain through his encounters with Frank. We the audience go along on this strange trip. Donnie laughs at the end because he has come to accept his fate and now has full understanding of what has happened.

>pic related
>Donald Trump = moonchild
>Frank = Trump
Frank's eye...

Donald Trump = Antichrist/Messiach archetype
He miraculously survives another attempt and claims he's the second coming/divinely ordained to rule...

At last I truly see. I assumed the Moonchild to rule humanity under the Aeon of Horus was William V though. Maybe he's some sort of false savior/Christ-like archetype who fights Trump?

My take is this: just like in the Butterfly movie, we all have the power to go back in time and change things due to our connection with God.

But let’s say you go back to 2011 and buy a lot of bitcoins. You will lose the people you are now. You will hurt people. In the end, you will regret paying this price. You are not willing to pay the price, so that’s why you can’t change your life.

why are you wearing that ridiculous (hu)man costume?
>>
>>42419374
Some good answers but in the end it is the hero dying after he sees what he sees and learns what he learns which was not "real" yet it was and it doesn't matter anyway, seeing and learning are real. It's pretty sad.

They say it's sybolic for the spiritual journey.
Donnie starts ignorant, then makes paranormal experiences that lead him to question conventional reality, then finds out cosmic secrets, people think he's crazy, he becomes isolated from mainstream society...and then he decides to sacrifice his life to change the timeline and save the life of his gf.

Yes I agree. He is the only one that can “save them” because he is the only one that can “see”… also interesting how the time he writes on his arm is “when the world will end”- but really it’s just that his world ends
