I don't think I notice things that are somehow intentionally hidden in plain sight. But I do think we have the ability to notice intricate structures that we would otherwise ignore. Often these patterns are meaningless and entirely natural, but I suspect this ability is significantly underutilized because changes in perceptual organization can affect motor functioning and other cognitive processes. I talked about this in another thread: we can sometimes deliberately, or with the help of certain chemicals, shift between different layers of perceptual organization, allowing the same sensory input to be experienced and interpreted in fundamentally different ways. For example, a forest can be perceived simply as a collection of trees, but with a change in perceptual set, patterns within the moving leaves may become organized as eyes, faces, figures, or trajectories resembling human movement. I believe this capacity can potentially be trained to a remarkable degree, allowing a person to become increasingly skilled at deliberately switching between, and making use of, different modes of perceptual organization. In this sense it could change how efficiently a person can act on what they see, because different perceptual organizations provide different structures for guiding movement, reflexes etc. Psychotic and altered states can access some of these features, but they also affect emotional salience and perceptual control too strongly, turning what might otherwise be a useful ability into something uncontrolled. I’ve had moments of it, but they’ve been mostly creative rather than involving the discovery of meaningful patterns. Also, the lack of empirical evidence for what causes these perceptions complicates things, because you’re often only seeing the aesthetic surface/face or isolated parts of something rather than its entire structure.
