Do you guys not get many trick or treaters these days? in my neck of the woods (Northern New England) we still get a pretty good amount. Also, when I was visiting a relative (during Last Halloween) in Northern Idaho, there was a ton as well. I wonder if this is like a regional thing or something.

Sold by the sheet in hardware stores, expensive stuff but it's the best for certain crafts. Durable, very workable, interacts well with glues and other materials. (Spray bottles will melt it, don't use any aerosols on uncoated foam)You'd want to glue a couple layers together to make a shaped "base" for your witches' head, and then sculpt details by paring it down with a hobby knife, sandpaper, etc. Once you like the design, some people would give it a layer of plaster-paper for fine details and protection, but this isn't strictly necessary if your base sculpt is so good that you don't want to cover it up. Plaster is messy stuff anyway, and less of a pleasure to work with. In either case, after painting the model you should insist on a layer of matte or satin protectant - I'd just use Mod Podge - which will make the thing pretty much indestructible. Insulation foam is just great, because it's so workable, durable, dense and lightweight. Need to drive a dowel in? Easy. King of foams. T. /tg/ guy. Some experience doing dioramas and such with these materials
