Most of my friends it was around 12-14, I knew a few kids who's parents actively forbad them from trick or treating after they turned 13, others it was after the 8th grade. My last time Trick R Treating was actually the 9th grade, when I was 14, but I went with some friends that were in the grade below.As an adult my rule is simple, if you have a costume, you get candy.

At 13 it became Halloween parties with the church youth group.One of the last times I went trick or treating we were jumped by a group of teens who pushed me into the bushes and chased after my friends for a couple blocks. It was a good memory, despite the content, because it was a taste of the "trick" side of trick or treating. Nobody was hurt, and it made for an interesting night afterwards as I was visiting friends in another town so I got lost. Spent a few hours wandering around town alone collecting candy. In retrospect I was pretty lucky to make my way back again since I was completely unfamiliar with the town, but I happened to see one of those wooden playgrounds that look like castles and with that landmark made it back. Those playgrounds were dope. That kind of construction probably wouldn't fly these days.These days I wonder what trick or treating is like for kids. No phones back then, only minimal parental supervision, just cool costumes and trading up for as many Milky Way bars as I could. I think this year I'll carve a pumpkin.
>>42902965When I was about 11 or one of my best childhood friends started having Halloween parties, BEFORE Trick Or Treating. Basically school would be out by 3, and his Mom would drive me to his place. Over the next half hour everyone would start coming over, everyone and I MEAN everyone. We'd play games, we'd tell ghost stories, talk about what candy we wanted to get. We'd sometimes also have dinner (Pizza, sometimes wings and stuff) although I def remember eating before the party some years, there was a local pizza joint walking distance from my elemantry school, they'd make these "pizza skulls" every year, they were a hot commodity the whole month. I still eat pizza every Halloween.

It's fun to walk around the store and look at all the horror/pop culture merch, but I don't actually buy much from them anymore. If I were you I'd try thrifting. All the thrift shops/goodwills near me have got little halloween knick knacks/miscellanea on the shelves now, most of it's super cheap. I've got multiple costume props and pieces from those places in the past as well, and boy am I glad I didn't shell out extra dough for the cheap chinese crap they sell at Spirit. If you don't have much cash to spend on decorations, gather up all the Halloween images and postcards you like from the threads and get them printed out on some card stock or glossy photo paper at staples. It only costs a few bucks and you can hand them out to friends, stick 'em up on the walls, or just leave them in piles on the coffee table. If you aren't too sensitive to scents and you grew up enjoying the smell of seasonal fall spices, get a wax burner. It adds a great deal for the pricepoint because memory and smell are so closely linked. You can also pick up some purple/orange string lights for like 20 bucks, just make sure you get the plug-in kind so you're not changing batteries every couple days.

Sometimes you could just see the blatant contempt in the eyes of people handing out candy to a kid that's already hit his growth spurt, and that only made the candy sweeter. After I stopped I never saw or heard of anyone having cool late night Halloween house parties like in the movies, so in my experience that kind of thing was always done at a public venue of some kind.

Goodwill and Salvation Army are your best friend for Halloween decorations, especially the day after. Most of the decorations I have I picked them up at Goodwill for half of what I'd pay at Michael's, definitely check it out now and after Halloween.

I have so many die cuts and decor that it's insane that I'd even want to get more, but it's an addiction. Esp. unique pieces that are home made or antique from Good Will. We’d usually start putting up decorations around Thanksgiving weekend. That was the late 90s/early 2000s tho.
