What exactly is a brojo? Tried looking around for some MMA classes in my city recently, I told my friend about it and he said MMA is all just a bunch of brojo gyms. What the fuck?

If I had to guess with nothing but this post to go on I would say it's a portmanteau of "bro" and "dojo", the implication being dumb, jocky, frat types.
>>
>>236315
how do you tell apart a good gym from one of those then
>>
>>236316
idk I'm only here to post in the sumo threads

Is sumo a good and practical style for something like the UFC? I would be open to practicing it at home.
>>
>>236318
No, it's best suited for competitions with ring out and knockdown rules

>what exactly is this word my friend used
ask your friend and post results

Depends on what makes a "good" gym to you. You can always take a trial class or two and assess the vibe. Keep an eye out for how injured people seem to be and what level they're competing at, if at all.

Check to see if any women attend it.

No, probably one of the worst martial art bases for the UFC. Almost every sumo who went into MMA did horribly

how?
>>

It can't be worse than Tai Chi, Aikido, Juho Kenpo, 2/3 of all kung fu styles, etc.

Bodybuilding would be better than trying to "practice" fighting by yourself. Just focus more on training neck, deltoids, and core.

Sumo isn't a good base, it's heavily reliant on gripping the mawashi. You get good leg and grip strength, other than that the skills are nigh-untransferable. Lyoto Machida did some sumo and said it helped with takedown defense and balance, but he basically used none of the techniques. Just an increased sense of balance and leg strength for takedown defense.

Daily reminder that the last Lei Tai was fought by a Chen Tai Chi specialist who went undefeated for weeks on the raised platform before taking on students.

Does his style still exist? All I can find are the classes of elderly people meditating in slow motion.
