I have time to learn one martial art. I'm in a large city, and they probably have at least one school if not multiple. I'd like something that'd allow me to hold my own in an unarmed one on one fight. What should I do?
You will always hold your own with boxing
>>254145This guy is lying. As soon as you're on the ground the other guy will rape you. Do BJJ.
>>254154only if they do bjj, if they're just an idiot this doesn't apply.
>>254164Imagine some big idiot falls on top of youYou'll end up like that black guy Vs the two truckers. And the guys playing whack a mole on his head. Remember that video?
>>254132Wrestling or judo or boxing
>>254132Sumo
>>254132To hold your own you want to be able to execute 3 punches 3 kicks and a bit of wrestling.
>>254132Find a good MMA gym. You'll learn both stand up and grappling, which is what you need in the world today. You want to be able to fight on your feet and avoid having to grapple as much as possible. Grappling is nice, but if you're on the ground in a bar or on the street, somebody is going to try and soccer kick your head off while you're trying to land that rear naked on you opponent. No MMA gym? Then find a good boxing gym.
>>254132Boxing is the perfect self-defense artEffective, affordable, low skill floor, and you can find a boxing gym virtually everywhereKickboxing and Muay Thai are more effective, but sacrifice the simplicity and availability Grappling in general - wrestling, bjj, judo, sambo - is extremely effective, but the skill floor is very high, you're looking at a significant time (and monetary, in some cases) investment before you can fight effectively
>>254627You can teach someone body lock takedown into rear naked choke or high crotch into slam in a few minutes
>>254629But that's not what being an effective grappler is - because you know one move that's applicable in one specific situation, and the moment your opponent does anything that even slightly deviates from it, you're screwedIt's like only knowing how to throw a left hook and calling yourself a boxer
There's no one size fits all answer. If you choose grappling you won't learn how to punch. If you choose striking you won't know how to grapple. So do MMA or just find a gym with multiple martial arts
