>onosato tries anyway, does admirably for a man with a shoulder like a ripped canvas sack

>in training Onosato can't even beat juniors and they relent and let him go to the hospital
>it's really fucking bad
>kisenosato at last admits, "we're considering surgery, this won't heal in just one or two basho"
I do not feel it was Onosato who is a disgrace but either his master or hakkaku, perhaps both.
>>
>>261512
Hakkaku being a tremendous cake eating la-la homo man has been a known thing for a while now. His support of Fujinokawa's recklessness is probably the reason for his current "injury".
>>
>>261513
I'm so fucking pissed his insistence might've been what destroyed Onosato. His career, from everything I've been able to find in sports medicine might genuinely be over and watching his meteoric rise was some of my favorite time watching sumo, I am so gutted. I knew hakakku was retarded but he'd never as far as I paid attention been the cause for someone's direct downfall like this. Maybe I just wasn't paying enough attention.
>>
>>261512
Holy fuck they totally blundered the best japanese rikishi of this century didn't they.
>>
>>261449
I miss flashbulbs at sporting events so much. Made big moments feel even bigger.
>>
The most infuriating part of this is how Hakkaku's own stable is so fucking low tier. Like nigga, if Isegahama had said this shit he might've had a point because of his 7-8 sekitori, but holy shit by the numbers Hakkaku is such a shit stablemaster, his entire authority comes from his rank and not his actual ability.
>>
>>261517

Nice schizo headcannon dude.
>>
>>261520
What is the headcannon part? Not the OP but seems like everything mentioned there was written in the media.
>>
>>261521
Mainly the parts where he assumes direct cause and effect based on statements made to the media. I don't care for people posting their opinions on how or why things happened the way they did as if they are speaking absolute fact from a position of greater insight. It's been shown many people will take shit like this at face value, example Chris Sumo's older videos where he speaks as if he knew wrestler's inner thoughts.
Further assuming the extent of the injury and it's progression. As well as Onosato's own feelings and decisions towards it and the extent to which he took outside opinion and direction.
For better or worse it's been shown that many decisions in each stable are left up to the wrestler to handle themselves at all levels of sumo.
I want to clarify I don't see Onosato, Kisenosato, or Hakkaku as a disgrace in this situation. Hakkaku shit talks, that's just what he does, this doesn't have direct consequences.

>For better or worse it's been shown that many decisions in each stable are left up to the wrestler to handle themselves at all levels of sumo.

I don't see how you can say this when they are pressured every time by their elders in public spaces. I can't even imagine what it's like behind the curtains. Even if the decision is eventually up to the wrestler, they still live and are influenced by this system where everyone is expected to fight through,

>Hakkaku shit talks, that's just what he does, this doesn't have direct consequences.

You say this like he is just some bloke who is a fan of sumo, but in fact he is the top guy. His comments represent the whole JSA and the sport. His leadership is a direct cause of the career decline of the most promising rikishi. There could be a world where the sumo elders treat injuries like real problems with real solutions, instead of treating them like some fault of the psyche, where the rikishi is "just not working hard enough".
>>
>>261526
Look, I understand you hate Hakkaku, and I agree that I would prefer for "sumo" as a whole to treat injuries differently.
I'm not disagreeing that sumo elders have influence on those below them.
But again, you act like his comments have a direct and provable outcome on a wrestler's decisions, which is insane.

It's entirely possible Onosato himself felt surgery wasn't necessary at an earlier point. We however don't know.
>>
>>261528
No I don't hate Hakkaku, he is also a victim of the same system. His career also ended the same way.
But I do wish he would try to make systematic improvements, instead of furthering the problem, especially in an era where sumo is making a resurgence.

>But again, you act like his comments have a direct and provable outcome on a wrestler's decisions, which is insane.

I think it's insane you are saying it doesn't.

>But again, you act like his comments have a direct and provable outcome on a wrestler's decisions, which is insane.
the guy is basically like everyone's boss, there's a very clear power dynamic here that happens in literally any career and I believe it's a little lame to suggest just because Hakkaku didn't personally directly ask these guys to be reckless doesn't mean there wasn't any influence.

but I'm not gonna blame Hakkaku personally. These shoulder ligament injuries are a hell of a thing and even if they had done everything in the world it could have already ended Onosato's career regardless.
>It's entirely possible Onosato himself felt surgery wasn't necessary at an earlier point.
and really, a lot of this has a lot to do with the medical assessment of the injury. You take professionals at their word and sometimes they are wrong. Everyone involved must've been given the impression it wasn't so serious or torn, that it would get better with rest and PT.
My own mother went through something bizarrely similar, for like 6 years different ortho told her that her shoulder wasn't so serious, just giving her regular cortisone shots. only like the 4th ortho actually had her get an MRI and they saw that same ligament was ripped to shreds.
Except Onosato isn't a woman in her 60s. He's an absolute beast of an athlete in his prime, constantly exerting himself to the limits. He's a fucking national hero Japan born Yokozuna and they knew EXACTLY when he got injured. So why are they half-assing his diagnostics? Why are they just now talking about surgery? I feel like if you're such a high risk for a tear like this they should be taking a closer look.

"a" is for azukari, which is when the bouts were too close to call before they introduced torinaoshi. "d" is for when both wrestlers are unable to continue, either due to exhaustion or injury, before they introduced a mandatory break if the bout has gone on too long. I'm assuming "o" is just sumodb's internal term for "other" since the only examples are from the feudal periods.
There was also a specific term for when both wrestlers were absent for the same bout, but this is listed as a normal absence for both.

The YDC has spoken:
(regarding Kirishima) "Next tournament, a high-level championship will be required of him. It won't be easy and it will certainly be strict, but he must deliver results no matter who the opponent is. Both his final record and the overall quality of his bouts will matter."
>>
>>262203
So 13-2 probably won't fly unless both losses are at the hands of yokozuna.

It's all academic anyway, because Kirishima's a choke artist.
>>
>>262203
They said the same bullshit about horse and then promoted him on the 'strength' of a weak af yusho, they'll give it to kiriSHITma on another 12 win JY because they're afraid of being accused of racism if they don't

The YDC didn't say that. Asakayama-oyakata, currently the chief judge, is the one who said it. The YDC isn't part of the JSA. It's common for them to comment on the performances of other rikishi, but that's different from saying "this ozeki is up for promotion next tournament."

>>262210
This basho shouldn't count imo but given that it seems set in stone now that a JY is a Y equiv, it's what we gotta live with. Although, I am glad that they are adjusting the strength needed of the Y based on the JY. So the weaker the JY, the stronger the Y has to be. And honestly, I don't even think a 13-2 with losses only to the Zunas will be enough. It's gotta be 14-1 or better imo. Too many top guys were out this basho and they have two Zunas right now.

>>262211
It's still important to note, as it sets some bar for what Kiri needs to be considered by the judges for Zuna recommendation.
>>
So, continuing on from /sp/, I created a profile on france.tv for the upcoming jungyo and the site is indeed region locked. It also asks you to turn off adblockers. Still not sure if I'll bother setting it up directly or be at the mercy of restreamers. I'd just hate to see the stream taken down in the middle of the thing and then have to look for a new one.
>>
>>262223
>given that it seems set in stone now that a JY is a Y equiv
Not sure what you mean by this. This has been a thing since the post-Futahaguro standards were put in place. A yusho is a yusho, a jun-yusho needs to be weighed on its merits.

A 12-3 JY where the winner goes 14-1 is not the same as a 12-3 JY with a playoff loss. Yes, the lack of ozeki and yokozuna in this basho need to be taken into consideration but it's also not his fault no one around him can stay healthy.

But to erase the doubts, this is exactly why a "high-level championship" will be required, per the YDC. Most likely, that's 15-0 or 14-1. 13-2 yusho probably won't be enough in any case, unless everyone's healthy, and all the yokozuna and ozeki put in good performances, with those losses coming at the hands of previous cup winners; and even then it's iffy.

Since they didn't describe it as a tear, even partially, and the recovery is only a month, it's probably just tendonitis and not a big deal if he doesn't go full retard, which he obviously will since he's in Kisenosato's stable. A partial tear can be handled without surgery in a few months, but might need surgery if that doesn't work. A full tear needs surgery with at least a year of recovery.
Expect him to be intai by the end of next year because him and Kisenosato are both brain dead rock-headed morons who won't let injuries properly recover, meaning this will graduate from tendonitis to a tear.

I think the number of tournaments should be reduced to four, one for each season. Six tournaments in a year is great financially and for the fans but it's ripping the bodies of the sumo wrestlers apart. In a sport where recruitment numbers are already historic low, sumo needs to retain it's established wrestlers even more so. Fewer tournaments means more time to heal up and recover.

Sumo has had six honbasho a year since 1958. If modern wrestlers are incapable of handling the workload of rikishi more than 60 years ago then there's another problem with modern sumo not related to the number of basho.

Still can't believe he achieved this physique natty.
>>

>>
>I just need to play my style of basketball
>>
are the glory days of sumo over?
>>
>>262560
Not enough flash bulbs in the crowd anymore. Everyone's dopamine receptors are so blown up that they can't enjoy a clash between two giant men, and they don't have the attention span to learn the stories and hardships of these men.
>>
>>262542
Having a flailing tard in the ring debases the honor of sumo.

I like him even more now that redditors hate him for being evil and violent.
>>262565
Having foreign yokozuna acting like MMA rockstar faggots was more dishonourable than some tard just being himself tbdesu.

I feel so empty after a basho....

Hiro used to produce good content for that channel and now he just lazily slaps together the same old slop. He could easily be replaced with AI his shit is so predictably boring

From sloppy slop with loud ill-fitting buttrock, to actual good content, to just going through the motions with lazy highlight slop.

THE LIGHTS ARE ON, BUT NOBODY IS HOME AT SUMO PRIME TIME
