I think he is a cool guy who hit his peak and then had both parents die along, with general injuries.
He can rarely pull off his normal bulldozer belly first brand of sumo and most of his close buddies that he grew up and entered sumo with have retired.
I'm generally sad to see most rikishi retire, but in a case like this there is also some relief when they do.

Dan is the only one capable of protecting the dignity of the yokozuna rank from having yet another mong mediocrity stain sumo by calling himself yokozuna. If it weren't for Dan's domination kiriSHITma would already be a yokozuna and we would be stuck with yet another horseSHITryu tier sack of crap defiling the rank for years.
All sumo fans should thank their gods that Dan was sent to us

Dan is the first great yokozuna of the post-mong era, he is the dominant figure who will put an end to the time of troubles that started with the collapse of the reign of absentee yokozuna terunofuji. The pretenders to the crown who sprung up during the interregnum will be cast aside by Dan and sumo will be granted a peaceful new era of dignified hinkakutastic yokozuna dominance

This is the record of someone who struggles with injuries, not to mention has to deal with Hakuho, Harumafuji, Kakuryu, and Kisenosato every basho. This is proven by how in his comeback when only the ghost of Hakuho remained he was basically unchallenged. In 9 basho he went 5 yusho, 3 jun yusho, and 1 kyujo. He was only Yokozuna for the last 2 of those, and one of those JYs was Hakuho's final zensho in which Chiyonofuji and Taiho in the ring together couldn't have beaten him.

My amazing conspiracy theory: Chiyonofuji’s sudden retirement in May 1991 was forced by external forces. Sumo officials or insiders found proof of his steroid use and gave him an ultimatum to immediately retire or they would go public and ruin his legacy forever. Shoulder injury was just a convenient exit strategy to sweep a massive doping scandal under the rug.

I already gave you another reason.
Did they deny Kakuryu's ozeki when there were already five ozeki? No, they made Kakuryu ozeki and they had six until Harumafuji made yokozuna. So there must have been a different reason. That reason was, he already had a weak ozeki tenure, and when he followed up his 14-1 with a 10-5, they felt compelled to assume he was a flash in the pan instead of someone who would've done better as ozeki the second time around.

Honestly wouldn't mind seeing Kirishima manage to get the rope this coming basho and then Aonishiki to manage the feat by end of year. It would give us a classical split of Yokozuna
>Aonishiki - all around terrifying, some injury concerns that stop him just running rampant
>Onosato - utterly dominant when uninjured (he is always injured)
>Kirishima - consistently good, filters the trash out of the yusho race, always chokes himself in the end
>Hoshoryu - prevents other guys from zensho and always looks good for a yusho (never does though), hands out meme kinboshi to keep us entertained
I could really go for that zuna spread. Note that things could change (Mongolians could stop choking, Aonishiki could get more injuries, Onosato could use there being multiple zunas to actually rehab and come back to what we know he can be) but atm that would still be a good lineup.

What is better? To be a sumo fan in an age of well-matched competitors jostling for rank, or an age of dominant individuals that hold the top ranks decisively for years?

We're currently in the former, obviously. I can't help thinking that in some ways it's preferable to the latter. Both can be engaging for different reasons.

I like having 3-4 rikishi that are supposed to be in contention for the cup every basho and then have 1 or 2 randoms getting to 10-11 wins for spice; and if they manage to overcome being just there for flavor and end up winning, then good for them.

Was Konishiki robbed of Yokozuna or was it the right call? I get videos about him recommended all the time but im pretty sure its all AI slop so i dont watch em. And speaking of that era were the YDC a lot more strict back then? Looking at Taka's rise it feels like you put that record in modern Sumo and hes given the rope in early 94.
>>
>>267801
It was the right call. Putting aside the talk about foreign yokozuna at the time (which was ripped to shreds by Akebono immediately afterward anyway), he would've been a weak promotion even in the pre-Kitao period. Asahifuji had a much higher peak than Konishiki did and the YDC still told him to fuck off until he actually put together two yusho in a row.
And yes, the YDC were extremely strict after Kitao/Futahaguro embarrassed himself and retired. From his retirement until Kakuryu every yokozuna needed back-to-back yusho without exception.
>>
>>267801
>were the YDC a lot more strict back then?
Pretty much, yeah, thanks to the disaster that was Futahaguro
From Chiyonoyama to Onokuni, the standards were somewhat similar to the modern criteria (counting Yusho equivalents and such) but a string of somewhat borderline promotions in the 80s, coupled with the scandals (and lack of Yushos) of Futahaguro made them become much more strict going foward (with Asahifuji being the first one to be affected directly)
The standards were only relaxed after Kakuryu's promotion back in 2014, returning to the more Yusho+Yusho equivalent style we have today
>>
They need to make zuna promotions 3 yusho in a row. Horshityus of the world need not apply.
>>
>>267807
Only previous 'zuna should have a say or a vote in promotions.
>>
Yokozuna should go back to being licensed by a single family for the sole purpose of recognizing whichever ozeki are popular and dignified enough to perform in front of the royal family. Breaking tradition by making it a sporting rank was a mistake.
