Tried nollies yesterday and got significantly better by treating them like fakie ollies in terms of anticipating when jumping out of a kicker.
Also got better at nose manuals.
Tried fs smiths on a straight ledge out of a kicker but sadly failed multiple times to land it.
I have now made it my goal to learn put in some effort and learn some basic tricks like that.
Noseslides and maybe kickflips on my list too.

t. skating for over 20 years but managed to neglect oa lotta basic stuff because rather skate transition

> to my surprise, muscle memory is impressive. I can immediately hop on the board, bomb mild hills, even ollie over manholes/up curbs, and do some sketchy 180s and easy flip tricks. the only kicker is that I have the balance of a drunk person so it all feels sketchy.
> end up skating way too long one day and my back ankle has pain for a whole week after.

how long does it take for the balance to come back? it's kind of demoralizing when your mind feels like it can do all the shit you remember, and you can somewhat, but you feel perpetually drunk while doing it. I also have this constant paranoia that I might have arthritis, and that all of this effort is in vain, not to mention if that is the case, it never would have happened if I wouldn't have quit skating.

it's funny how many of the older pro skaters that gen z worships are lame pieces of shit. the whole deathwish era is when it started to go downhill. those are the first guys I remember putting on demos, but showing up completely wasted, doing drugs in front of 5-year-olds, and shifting skate culture entirely to degeneracy and drug use. Antwuan Dixon even started a fight with a 15-year-old kid at my skatepark when he was shitfaced drunk, and everyone truck bashed his ass until they had to carry him out. there were like 2 guys on that team that were even sober enough to skate at the demo they put on. contrast that to when the adio team came a couple of years before that, all of those guys ripped and were respectful and down to earth. the whole dude weed era around 2010-2013 was a blight on skating.
>>
>>270217
At some point corporate skateboarding ventured from elite skateboarding into the territory of death defying stunts.
It's sort of a consequence of that change.
>>
>>270217
I went to a Split clothing demo and one of the guys sat there with me and couple other kids teaching us how to 360 flip. It was awesome.
Three years later, Emerica came through and was there for maybe 45 minutes in total. They didn't talk to any kids, expected food and drink to be provided and got pissed when it wasn't (probably contributed to their short stay), and Justin Strubing was the only one who did more than one trick.
Don't meet your heroes.

I remember exactly when Nike SB really took off. it was around 2008 when even small town skateshops started really carrying them, even the gay dunk hypebeast shit. Almost overnight, everyone was skating in dunks. I was a late adopter, and when I finally started skating dunks(went through about 3 pair alltogether, I was shocked that so many people kept skating them because they genuinely had some very big flaws that made them suck. on the good side, they had good padding without being too rigid and numb feeling, but the thing that made them shit was the grip pattern on the bottom. it was worse than 90% of actual core skate shoes. I remember on rainy days at school, you would have to be careful not to bust your ass when you went inside on the floors with wet shoes. this translated to skating too because it was harder to run up big banks with skatelite at the park. also, I was always a big ollie guy, and I actually had to tame my ollies or I would frequently shoot my front foot completely off the end of the board. not to mention like 75% of the colorways didn't even have suede, so you had even less grip with the faux leather shit. then at some point blazers became popular... boy oh boy, don;t even get me started on those. they skated better than dunks for sure due to most of them being suede, the bottom grip texture being different, but the hi tops were the most flimsy shit ever. I used to roll my fucking ankle all the time in those. I had one pair and said fuck that after, those are ankle breaking shoes for sure. dunks/sb in general were astroturfed onto the scene seemingly overnight and people just kept skating them forever despite thinking they were mediocre. many good skaters shared my opinion. unironically the best shoes I ever skated were circa al50. was back in the fat shoe days, but they were surprisingly light, and you could skate them right out of the box like they didn't need to be broken in. most were suede or canvas so crazy good grip.

reading comprehension? are you really sitting here trying to claim that nike sb is the best skateshoe? you were probably born in 2010 and never tried anything else. kek. also, that wear patter is... if you know you know. we had those posers who used to rub their shoes on griptape for hours to make it look like they actually skated too.

>>
>>270277
You complained about PU coated leather being slippery, and I posted a shoe made with PU coated leather. It scrapes off almost instantly and has never caused me any issues in all the years I've skated.
You ran into skill issues and you're blaming them all on the brand of shoe even though Nike isn't the only brand that uses those materials.
>>
>>270282
first off, blazers are completely different structurally to the dunk. vulc vs cup.stiff vs flimsy. reinforced toe vs standard. so, yeah they skate differently. if you would have reading coprehension, you would have even seen that my original post claimed that the blazers skated good unlike the dunk. my gripe being that they are unstructured, which is 100% fact. at the end of the day however, the reality is that 75% of skaters always chose suede/canvas shoes to skate in. the leather ones were almost always bought just to wear casually, as it was always seen as inferior material for skating. you're one of the minority that actually unironically bought leather hypebeast colorway blazers to skate in.
>>
ipath grasshopper, lakai telford, etc solved the dunk shortcomings. it's crazy how people went back to dunks just because they have the hype with non-skating crowd.

I feel like you just have an axe to grind against Nike and are attributing your personal failings to the brand. I pointed out that you were wrong about PU coated leather and you're losing your mind about things unrelated to my statement.
Try to be a little less upset all the time.
>>
i havent had any issues with whatever leather they used on the grasshoppers
>>
>>270297
I'm not the one that was posting about Nike's downfall. I don't have a dog in the fight. I was just replying about tje discussion that corporate brands becoming big in skating was a bad thing. You're making assumptions. Your opinion is more valid than someone elses? I have multiple Nike SB boxes full of skatemags from 20 years ago so I'm not talking out of my ass.
>>
>>270298
it's not really an "issue" but the simple fact that suede/canvas is simply grippier. it's just reality. anything I can do in a leather shoe I can do bigger in a suede/canvas shoe. it's something you notice when skating at your limit, not just casually skating.
>>
>>270271
>the comments grill them good, I'm surprised yt shows them. they usually hide anything negative

Do they? I was thinking about that.

Gifted hit the nail on the head with this one. I was surprised Sammaria called her last trick a blizzard/360ยบ flip. Because Sammaria is ten times more technical than Nora. And yes, Nora did seem tired. She has a lot of style and is fun to watch and you never felt like she was shoved in your face, she was the final piece of the puzzle in Welcome, just 2 minutes before the whole thing went to shit. It's obvious Adidas IS trying to present her as a token of diversity, and the sad thing is she believed the hype around herself unfortunately.
Is she still with Albee Layer? Does anybody know?
>>
When I look at zoomzoom era companies I just cringe. They all seem low-effort. Like some fake company a 12-year-old at the skatepark would have come up with. "Welcome." That name automatically makes me trash bin it without even knowing what they sell or care who the team is. It's like hipster shit all over again. I just can't get on board. Then, half of these new companies are essentially b-tier anyways because their entire founding and people they sponsor is designed soley to turn literal b-league skaters pro because they couldn't make it at the real a-tier of skating.

>>
How is it easier for people to do tricks while moving? Way more goes wrong during a moving shuvit
>>
>>270311
maybe if you'er not actually popping it and just doing that little beginner shuv it where you jump forward. tricks are easier moving because that's the natural way you sakte. you rarely spend time stationary on a skateboard once you get past beginner stage. plus, your board can now roll backwards and forward when you're stationary, which is more unpredictable. while rolling, the board is in a state of motion that is more static and predictable. think of trying to walk on a treadmill that keeps going forward and reverse randomly, stationary skateboard is the same unless you are on carpet or some shit.

I wasted $90 cad on these. I'm afraid of them sticking to the ground all the time and they're only good for cruising.

I do like how quiet they are on new pavement, but that's not very helpful
>>
>>270310
I genuinely tried them on for the first time last year and they easily make the top 5 if not top 3 of shoes I've worn.

>>270271
Also to add, look at TreeCoop's comment chain. Definitely a troll, doubling down on obnoxiousness while (pretending to be) defending Nora just to actually inflame hatred, kek
>>
>>270314
Why, what softness are they?
>>
>>270316
90. I thought that would still be hard, just quieter, but I guess not.

Not sure what wheels to buy now. I'm thinking expensive wheels (formula fours are $100) are a meme.
>>
>>270317
why did you want softer wheels to skate normally? it's really hard to find anything that is truly a "softer hard wheel" I know spitfire has the 97 wheels, and I've never tried them, but reviews claim they feel no diffrent to a 99, or barely any different. one thing you can do is get a bigger diameter in the normal hard wheels. that also helps with rolling over rougher ground because of rolling resistance. if you skate 50s, try 54s. it's not a drastic diffrence in general but it does do enough to notice.
>>
>>270318
I thought they'd be comfy, and didn't know they'd be so grippy

They are 56mm.

Maybe now I'm looking for 52-54mm and 99. I wanted good looking wheels too. Skate brands have horrible taste in art.
>>
>>270319
you could always try the formula 4 97a in 54-56mm. anything meant for soaking up vibration and being comfy is gonna be grippy. you have to powerslide a completely different way with those kinds of wheels. like downhill longboarders. then you just get flatspots. your best best for getting a bit better ride out of hard wheels is to go bigger diameter, but also bigger width. I HATE wide wheels for trick skating, and they are noticeably heavier even for ollies, but the extra contact pattch spreads out the weight thus helping with crusty terrain. you really have to settle with the cmpromises for a comfier ride.
>>
>>270321
the 97a radial full or conical full is what I'm referring to. they are very wide, but still relatively hard.
>>
>>270321
thanks, I didn't even consider weight
>>
>>270323
you can get used to anything, but there are definitely wheel shapes that are "better" for certain things like grinds and such.
>>
>>270324
smaller seems better for popping, the main part of skating
>>
>>270325
Different anon here, the main part of skating is having fun.
>>
>>270325
it definitely is, but it also depends on your truck height. some trucks with a 56mm wheel are the same height off the ground as another truck with a 52mm wheel. when it comes to wide wheel styles like the radial full and conical full, they don't really hurt flip tricks/popping, but some grinds will be a bit different. they will ride over crusty pavement noticeably better than skinny wheels like classics. a bit harder to powerslide but still doable.it's more grip without being sticky grip. larger diameter also lasts longer too when you're buying expensive wheels. 56mm becomes 54mm eventually if you skate a lot.

>>270306
you know what I mean though. I took my muscle-atrophied legs outside to skate for a few minutes today. did a handful of ollies trying to feel somewhat comfortable with them and get more than a 2 inches off the ground. then I very gently attempted a nollie flip a dozen times. sketchy landings but hey I'm not starting at bare bottom which would be completely demoralizing. just after that, my shins and hip feel like I had been doing high-impact skating for an hour. I'm really contemplating building a small miniramp to build my leg muscles back up before I try anything stupid and get a real injury. It's strange that I could land a nollie flip but regular kickflips just don't even feel safe at all. my end goal is to just be able to ollie high as hell again and skate miniramps/parks without getting injured seriously or having chronic pain. small flow/transition skating, distance gaps, and step ups were always my favorite things to skate back in the day. along with long but low rails and curved benches/planters. there are no parks anywhere nearby, the one I grew up skating got closed down like most indoor parks.
>>270237
I actually threw in some white doh-dohs and it helped a bit it seems. I completely forgot how it takes a while to get used to looser trucks when you're a beginner. well, I've at least got to find out if it's just a matter of getting my body built back up for it gradually, or if my body is actually worn out. never had any issues until I stopped skating, but it's been a long time. my lifestyle has been fairly sedentary except weekends, so hopefully that's all it is. I'm fine with just skating one day a week if that's the best I'm eventually able to muster, I just want to get decently good. I know I'll never be even half as good as I once was because I'll never do any truly risky stuff, but at this point it's just about having fun and getting good balance back. that shit is important as you get older anyways

My shoes are so fucking uncomfortable. I should have kept one pair of my vans shoes that I liked so i can just buy it again.
It's terrible but i've bought three shitty pairs of shoes in a row. It's cause my feet are so wide and i always pick a shoe that's too tight.

I remember when this shit started. first dunks, then adidas marketing indoor soccer shoes as skateboard shoes. corporate companies are really fucking terrible. it's not even unc nostalgia brain either, because brands like vans for the most part have stagnated with zero innovation so they are just as bad.

rarely ever has the skateboard scene ever had good taste in music. ever had good music in a part. there are only a handful of note. it's always been the same carousel through the eras. avante garde hipster shit, hip hop, mainstream "ace of spades" type metal, repeat. I've always thought the biggest cringe in all of skting was the music for the video parts. then you realize that most filmers/directors of skate videos aren't very high IQ, aren't hollywood types. they're just the male vrsion of art hos. it's sad when one of the best songs in a part was "What you waiting for" by gwen stefani. a literal pop song. kek

What's up with the buy local shilling?

I found local skate shops from other cities, and general websites selling things for 40-60% less than my local shops

Got some amazing deals and skating isn't expensive anymore. Too bad I found these sites late. I could've saved $150
>>
>>270769
there are barely even any local shops anymore unless you live in a seriously busy city. people think the online market killed shops but that's simply not the case. shit like ccs was already popular back in the day. what killed shops originally was the overall decline in the amount of young skaters starting with the younger zoomer generation. a lot of shops were also tied in with paid indoor skateparks, which were killed off by free skateparks. it's finny because everyone always wanted free outdoor skateparks to be built everwhere, and it took them until around 2010 to even do so in smaller less populated areas of the country. when they finally did, naturally everyone went there instead of paid parks. those core paid parks and the shops with them couldn't pay the bills any longer. it especially sucked in places where you get a lot of rain. now all you have is a fucking outdoor concrete park to skate. 2000-2010 was the fucking golden era man. the talent is obviously higher now... but the actual amount of skaters is down, and the culture is so fractured. maybe if you live in socal or some shit it's still great, but everywhere else it really fell off gradually after 2010. most of the guys I grew up skating with are living the california couchsurfing life until they're too old to do it anymore, even guys who aren't ever gonna be pro. lots of them are kind just locked in at that flow/am level. I don't know what they're gonna do once they hit late 30s and have no career or money. skateboarding only really seems like it's not dying because of easy access to media and social online, but in person it is a shadow of it's former glory. if you ever go to a demo or contest these days, it's all millennials and zoomers. there are rarely kids there watching or skating parks.
>>
>tighten the bearings

>>
>>270777
It doesn't help that a lot of local shops, even the ones that are considered reputable on a more national stage, can be complete scumfucks if they feel like they can get away with it. I know it's anecdotal, but my personal experiences with trying to order from real brick and mortar stores that were too far for me to drive to have been mostly negative, yet CCS has never fucked me over the way, say Brooklyn Projects has.
>>
>>270780
the bearing seals pinch the bearings and slow them down

I'll never understand why skateboard filming hasn't evolved. it still and always has looked like shit to have a fisheye lens 6inches from the board. that's why whenever they throw in the alternate angle here and then that's shot from a stationary tripod, it always looks better.

let's be real here... the only reason the fisheye stayed in skating was because most skaters are 12-year-olds with no filmography education. not to mention, most filmers are skaters who weren't good enough to become pro so they just tag along the entire professional careers of their pro friends. I remember teenagers buying and installing fake fisheye lenses just to get the ring around the frame. a fisheye made so many small obstacles look big. if you go to half of the spots in videos you thought were impressive, you're like "this is that spot? shit looks small." why do you think they instead film big stairs and rails exclusively with tripods now?

haven't been here in awhile. i'm the anon who broke his elbow back in may. haven't stepped on a board since. still working on getting strength back in that arm and it sucks.
>>
>>270861
have you looked into rice bucket training?
idk how suitable it would be based on where you're at in recovery, but as a /fit/fag I know it's a pretty common way of rehabbing elbow injuries and sort of low intensity strength building
>>
>>270862
i have not. i got a stress ball thing i squeeze and manipulate, a rubber resistance bar i hold out and twist (like revving a motorcycle), a basic adjustable spring-resistance grip strength squeeze, and i also hold a literal hammer straight out and rotate my wrist/forearm back and forth 180 degrees (supination/pronation).
had a bit of a breakthrough this month and almost have full elbow extension, though that may never return. it's less than 5% extension loss which i'm considering a win.
all in all i'm making decent progress but all the muscle in that arm has atrophied, and i'm not young so building it back up is going to be a challenge
ngl i haven't even thought about skateboarding the past month or so, aside from a stray thought about maybe selling some of my decks.

I tries doing a switch kickturn today, didn't make up my mind halfway through, and fell on my ass and elbow. Its always when I don't wear elbow pads.

Some say it took them 6 months to learn kickflips. I guess I can do that over the winter... somewhere.

spent so much time learning to skate in my teenage years, getting my tricks and doing gaps and other obstacles at the skatepark.
the past couple years my life has become so busy with school, work, social life, other hobbies etc, that skating has been put on the back burner and ive been getting significantly worse from a lack of being on the board.
im a fraction of what i used to be, ive lost most of my tricks and mainly my confidence, so all i can really do now is 180 the hip and maybe do a kickflip on flat.
risk of injury is not worth it anymore but i used to be good and it has been weighing on me heavily, affecting my day to day mood.
how can i cope with the fact that im getting old and skateboarding is just not compatible with my lifestyle anymore?
for some context i went to the skatepark today and i was too scared to ollie a 2 stair and i couldn't even do a manual on the box.

the baggy clothes skaters and zoomers in general are wearing now, are the same baggy clothes that got me no pussy when I was that age. they look HORRIBLE and I'm embarassed for even wearing them, but it was the late 90s very early 2000s style. once more slim fitting clothes came around in like 2005-2015, I was still wearing baggy. my shit was never as baggy as the ugly shit they're wearing now though, it looks absurd. that shit is pusy repellant.

if you're in Canada, I can recommend switchnow.ca
I bought wheels, trucks, and other stuff there and it arrived in 2 days. it's cheaper than anywhere else. I also have a code for an extra 10 percent off. isn't that the same concept as the ol ricta clouds but in reverse? it sounds backwards and even worse. it's just not really possible to get the best of both worlds, regardless of marketing gimmick. it's always gonna be a compromise. if you're really insistent on making hard wheels better for crusty pavement, you just gotta get wider wheels, and go up in diameter also. soft wheels are for crusing. they feel weird when you pop and land, there is too much bounce and not enough feedback from them. you can get used to it if you skate them all the time, but not if you're trying to go back anf forth. I've got an entire setup with big softer wheels, it's still a trick style popsicle deck and trucks, I've just got risers and 60mm wheels on it. ollies over stuff is about as "trick" as I get with it though.
>>
>>271003
>I've just got risers and 60mm wheels on it.
What hardness? I just want a small wheel in the 80-90 range and there's nothing cheap available.
These wheels here
>>270895
are 55mm 78a, but I'm not sure the bearings are removable, does anyone know?
>>
>>271004
mine are 88a. that sounds like it's not very soft, but it is compared to your normal hard street wheel. it's just not gummy bear soft like a 78a for example. the risers I'm using are OJ juice cubes which are a soft style riser to absorb vibration which helps your feet not go numb from vibration, but definitely makes the pop feel even more numb when doing ollies. what exactly is your intended purpose? globe is an international brand and has some pretty cheap wheels. just note that softer wheels, and especially cheap ones will probably chunk and flatspot extremely eeasy if you hit something at an angle.
>>
>>271005
>88a
That sounds great, I'm on 100a 52mm and the racket and vibrations on pavement are too much.
>globe
I doubt they're cheap, I haven't found anything in legitimate skate shops, I have to cop something off a kids' board.

>tfw I had a pair of รฉs shoes that had the sole fall completely off a week after I bought them and the Sole Tech rep shrugged and said it wasn't his problem
Nike was just getting started at that point and pretty much every skater in the state swapped from accels to dunks overnight purely because of one regional rep being a dickhead to everyone.
Nike knew what they were doing, too. They're shit now because they're entrenched and don't have to care, but contacting Nike about a QC issue in 2003 meant they sent you free shoes with almost no questions asked and no need to return the bad ones, so you could still skate them if the problem was trivial enough.

I haven't kept up with the skating scene in years. See Andy Anderson. Think he's just one of "those guys" who does weird shit to make up for lack of core skills. ignore him. finally watch some videos of him and realize he's actually one of the best overall skaters of all time. can skate anything. very consistent even in raw b-roll videos. does very technical shit that 99% of skaters couldn't do. not even caring about his freestyle shit, that's not my thing. the way he does the nosegrinds and hops over to the other side nosegrind is something nobody ever thought to do. all this time I thought he was a gimmick skater.
>>
>>271048
>I thought he was a gimmick skater.
Tards pushed this idea because he doesn't fit in with what the 'core' crowd considers cool, especially due to the helmet. They were frightened that he was ruining the image of skating because he started getting pushed into the mainstream a lot. The backlash got worse when the older beginner crowd started idolising him and buying his ugly decks. Most people who have AA decks are probably 45+. Of course, these 'core' cunts underestimate how little most people think of skating so it wouldn't have affected anything, but they did get scared for a second there. Lame, insecure bitches that take themselves too seriously and want to be taken seriously.

This week's closing thoughts

My switch stance is coming along. I can kickturn on slopes now and don't fall. Committing and turning my shoulders was key

Hippie jumps have helped me a lot overall. They are a great warmup

I need to get over my fear of doing tricks somehow. Like doing a pop shuvit and jumping forwards to land on it is wild and I cannot believe so man men can do even crazier tricks

Practicing manuals is creating another razor edges board :/
>>
>>271102
>I need to get over my fear of doing tricks somehow

you could also get a carpet and a snowskate, that's how i learned most tech shit when i was a kid
>and jumping forwards to land on
if you have do do this you are doing your shuvs wrong. they should come right to your feet
>>
>>271076
I've seen random 14 year olds rip 10ft bowls, in fact I've landed a few backside airs and can't be considered a good skater. Bowls are fun but they're for grandpas.

>>271077
I gave him a chance, worked past my cringe, and watched several videos a few years ago. He has a weird dynamic with his filmers, something like "look at how gnarly this is going to be daddy, did you see that, am I cool yet?". He sounds retarded FOR A SKATER which is a damn low bar. Even a guy like Andrew Reynolds who sounds like he forgets how to tie his shoelaces every now and then sounds smart compared to that special needs helmet wearer. And his skating just doesn't look good, lacks lightness and flow.
>>
>>271106
your idea of "ripping" is different. I'm not talking about airs. those are easy as a kickturn andy anderson can rip a big bowl like a seasoned skater. if you can't see it, then you don't know what bowl skating is supposed to look like. also, "style" is the most subjective and dumb thing in the skate community. motherfuckers glaze dudes who literally only skate ledges and manual pads because muh style, meanwhile they can't skate anything else. same with people glazing black dudes who can ollie high with their arms down, which unironically looks like shit.
>>
>>271109
>"look at how gnarly this is going to be daddy, did you see that, am I cool yet?"
>And his skating just doesn't look good, lacks lightness and flow.
Don't even bother with this faggot, whether he's baiting or retarded doesn't matter.
>>
Andy Anderson is into CBT
>>
>>271109
fwiw i think the things the make bowls sick are highly feel based and it's hard to show that on video.
>>
>>271109
I'm not denying that Anderson is a very apt skateboarder, he definitely deserves to be a pro, but I find him insufferable, he's not the endearing type of dork. Not commenting on ledge skaters, they're legit as they come. The only type of skaters who only do one type of skating that I don't get are flatground dudes. Where's the risk?

>>271110
He literally says shit like "woah man did you see how far back I tipped the board on this rock'n'roll, that was so cool". I don't mind stupid people but the least they can do is be humble. I genuinely find his skating blocky, rushed, overwrought. Sure, it's cool to be able to pop a darkslide, but it feels like everything he does is to be validated and seen, not for his own satisfaction.
>>

>>271109

Style is the only thing that matters. I don't care if Nyjah does a switch 3 flip down el toro because he's going to look like a kid that shit his pants while he does it. I would much rather see Leo Romero nosegrind a foot tall flatbar.
>>
>>271127
Bro, I was thinking the same thing when I started skating, but honestly, Nyjah is a fucking beast. What is bad about him is that he doesn't have a connection to the culture so much: he is not from a crew, he wasn't in any homie or skateshop videos, he was fast tracked to be a competition machine and to have sponsorships. But his street parts are all-time.

any wheels roll on pavement. what are you asking? are you talking about is it good for really rough shitty pavement? probably. it's just one of those weird durometers. if you're really trying to skate REALLY shitty pavement, you want softer probably. 90a is more for medium shitty pavement.
