The story is just laid out so hazardously. There's an insane amount of twists and turns but it doesn't feel like they're given any time to breathe so they're all tripping over each other and the waters get muddied. I suspect there's a decent amount of things that I wouldn't like even if they were adapted faithfully, but they just become a non-starter when jumbled like this.

Then we learn that he knows about return by death, so I interpreted it as him wanting to do that in order to be able to abuse Subaru's ability. But then there's the the Tome of Wisdom, which if he really was simply following all along kind of throws away any sort of personal goal discussed prior unless they were written in the book. Plus the entire obsession with Echidna where he states multiple times that his goal was simply to reunite with her. Even at the end of the season, during the ceremony. Also, toward the end of the season he goes on about how he never believed in Emilia's ability to complete the trial to begin with, so that being part of a plan lost credibility. This kind of destroyed the entire mastermind thing and replaced it with just another follower of a book to me. I'm pretty sure I got it all wrong but gave up since I'd like to avoid major WN and LN spoilers. Luckily it didn't affect S3 enjoyment.
