Alright, it is Thursday and I am gonna post the third volume of Yashahime Princess Half-Demon. Feel free to react or comment on any panel, though I appreciate if image replies are not used during the dump. Feel free to discuss anything related to Yashahime (or Inuyasha) after the dump.Yashahime was initially created as an anime-only sequel to Inuyasha by Sunrise. The designs of the main cast were provided by Rumiko Takahashi. I have not watched the anime. The manga adaptation was made after the first season and was written and drawn by Takashi Shiina, the creator of Ghost Sweeper Mikami and most likely the biggest Rumiko Takahashi fan in the world. As such, I decided to read and story time this series as well. My commentary will be sparse as I am completely new to the series, but I hope you enjoy the look into Shiina's take on the Inuyasha world.Previous thread: >>287502584I will be using the official localization of the manga by VIZ. Be aware that some of the larger images may have been edited to be lower quality due to image size limits.
Oops. Wrong name in the OP. Whatever. You all know it is me. Cover's on the next page.April 25th, 2022. Author's note:"Thank you to the anime staff for all your hard work! I'll do my best to make the comicalized version."
>>287661553Glad to see you back OP.>>287661703It's ok, Yasha is technically still Rumicworld anyway.
>>287661703Excited.
>>287661880
>>287661891
>>287661880She's like a puppy in a big open back yard.
>>287661903So yeah, not even Kirara.
>>287661553>and most likely the biggest Rumiko Takahashi fan in the worldNah, that's you.
>>287661997So, Furinkan summarizes the blogpost which I'll link here, but I'm going to be copying the notes regarding it as they come up rather than how it was outlined in the post."He states that having Sango become pregnant again is something he wanted to include to bridge the gap between the Inuyasha manga and his Yashahime manga. He states that if Sango gives birth to the baby that he will ask for Rumiko Takahashi to name the child.Shiina states, "I think it is a bit forced to say that Miroku's fourth child was born more than ten years after Hisui, but I, as a historical writer, have incorporated the theory of Inuyasha historians that Miroku and his wife must have had many children after "Since Then" into my own fiction... I hope you can think of it as something like that. Incidentally, the theory that "after Hisui-kun, stillbirths and premature births followed" is reasonably convincing as historical evidence, but it is too sad, so I rejected it in my spacetime.""http://cnanews.asablo.jp/blog/2022/04/
>>287662064Some things stay the same.
>>287662103Nice to see the wolf demons again.>>287662052Heh, that's sweet and I'll take top ten.
>>287662174Hehe, this is one of the things people are quick to bring up when they talk about Kagome choosing to stay in the past. It is funny to see Shiina discuss it.
>>287662211More blogpost stuff:"In his blog for April 26th Shiina discusses some of the historical elements of the bathhouse that he wanted to include in this chapter of the manga. However he says some of the information he wanted to include was simply too much and so he delves into more detail in his blog post. "I cut this out because I thought that I would not be able to go on any longer about baths," he stated. He explains that a "furoshiki" (風呂敷) was originally a cloth used in the bath. In modern parlance these are clothes used to carry bundles or wrap gifts."As mentioned in the main story, a "yukata" (浴衣) was originally a kimono worn when taking a bath. In the Edo period (1603-1867), yukata were worn after bathing to prevent burns from direct exposure to steam, and eventually became casual summer wear," Shiina states. The bathhouse that the girls visit is based on a real place in Hiroshima called Mantoku History Park (万徳院歴史公園/Mantoku-in Rekishi Koen). Shiina states that in reality the bathhouse is much smaller than what he depicts."
>>287662257Of course, the first panel states how Kagome depicted bathing in the original series.
>>287662291I wouldn't put it past Shiina for the "dark and cramped" line to be a reference to Shutaro Mendo's claustrophobia in UY.
>>287662291Towa looks so cute in the first panel
>>287662342So yeah, for anyone worried about Kagome, she basically did the iron drum bath that Japanese people sometimes do in rural environments.
>>287662404The struggle continues.
>>287662460Furinkan says the use of the name Julian here is a "reference to the pop singer that Towa is a fan of who is referenced in episode 6 and episode 43."
>>287662488
>>287662504Kind of funny to just see the word yokai right next to the word half-demon. I feel like you gotta commit at that point, VIZ.
>>287662522
>>287662538Per Furinkan regarding the blog:"He states he is including other small details such as the way women sit and the seven-ball abacuses. However most "Inuyasha-lokian" are probably more concerned with Miroku and Sango's family planning. He uses the "-lokian" from the Japanese word シャーロキアン of describing something as "Sherlockian" when discussing "Sherlock Holmes"."
>>287661880It's weird seeing these earlier chapters without a "Translated by: [name]" next to the title. Maybe they changed translation teams.
>>287662633Though, I googled it and it seems the term is more often translated as seven-rod abacus. And this one has a lot more than seven rods.
>>287662668Big hug. >>287662655I believe that's another distinction from the chapter releases and the volume ones as translators are credited simply at the beginning of the volume instead.
>>287662694
>>287662711Shippo... 2. Though this one has human feet.
>>287662731Shiina seems to be having a bit of fun here as the Konton depicted by this wanted poster is not the design we've seen in the manga. It is the one from the anime.
>>287662760Hence Towa's line here. Also, Furinkan notes that: "When the girls ask about Konton's whereabouts they are told by Takechiyo he is in the "Suruga Province" (駿河国). This is the old name for an area that is central Shizuoka Province in the present day." Oh, by the way, regarding Takechiyo's name, here's Furinkan's note: "竹千代 Takechiyo is written with the kanji "竹" (bamboo), "千" (thousand), and "代" (a counter for eras or lengthy periods of time)."
>>287662810
>>287662825
>>287662874Per Furinkan: "Takechiyo shows the girls how to make boiling water using the bone of a demon and drawing out its "yoryoku" (妖力). This simply means "spirit power" or "magical power"." Not yoki this time, it seems.
>>287662902Hehehe.
>>287662911Soul skimmers. Soul collectors. Or shinidamachu. Dead soul insects. The things Kikyo had.
>>287662939Usually, when a dead person crumbles to dust, I don't expect them to show up again.
>>287662947
>>287662961
>>287662977Furinkan mentions the following from the blogpost:"The author says he has placed Sesshomaru with Rion and Riku in order to reach the ending of the story in a succinct fashion. He states he has to summarize events from the anime in his manga comicalization. He states, "the manga is designed in such a way that even those who have seen the anime, will think 'Oh, so that's how it's done!'"."Also, I'll be honest, I don't remember this limitation of the Tensaiga but it might be something I missed. I mean, it is somewhat logical but I feel like Jaken was dead for a bit before being brought back. Either way, I get the mention of it here.
>>287663056
>>287663068Dust once more.
>>287663128And uh, that's that.
>>287663143
>>287662902The direct kanji appear to be....>妖力を送り込むんだぞ。>妖力>YōryokuHuh. What's the difference between that and Yōki, I wonder? Maybe the app I'm using to identify kanji on an image isn't getting it right.
>>287663056>Also, I'll be honest, I don't remember this limitation of the Tensaiga but it might be something I missed. I mean, it is somewhat logical but I feel like Jaken was dead for a bit before being brought back. Either way, I get the mention of it here.I kind of interpreted this as being a situation similar to Kagura where for some reason Tenseiga couldn't revive her either.
>>287663156You'll regret it if you get your book wet.>>287663245I mean, that's the same one Furinkan said so I imagine it is getting it right.
>>287663306For some reason when I read your Funrinkan one I thought it said Reiryoku. Fool on me.
>>287663306Per Furinkan: "When Towa eventually makes a bath using Sota's notes the image is demonstrated with Ranma Saotome and P-Chan, two characters from Takahashi's manga Ranma 1/2. Both of these characters are cursed so that when they are splashed with cold water they change forms. On his Twitter Shiina stated, "When Ranma and P-chan made a cameo appearance, my wife, who was an assistant [to Rumiko Takahashi] at the time of the Ranma serialization, said, "P-chan is smaller!""."https://x.com/Takashi_Shiina/status/1525032505870790657>>287663291I feel like there was a pretty distinct reason for that (being that she's Naraku basically...) but I don't know.
>>287663365End of chapter. Some more Furinkan notes:"Shiina goes on to state that he had considered depicting how to make a bath and using Meioju from Yashahime episode 9 and showing him using his shell as the bath tub. He explains that he thought about using his shell to make a "Goemon Bath" (五右衛門風呂/Goemon furo) which is a large, iron-kettle style bathtub. The term "Goemon Bath" is named after a form of torture where the bath is heated from below by a flame and the victim is placed on a wooden lid that is floating on the surface of the ultra-heated water. As the are placed on the wooden lid it sinks and they are boiled alive. This form of torture is named after Goemon Ishikawa the famous historical thief (the fictional Goemon Ishikawa XIII from Lupin III is his descendant). However with the introduction of Takechiyo in this chapter he felt it might become overly complicated and changed some elements from the anime. Shiina goes on to state that while the bathing scenes were not necessary he felt that much like the discussion of food in pervious chapters it is a way of showing Towa is trying to "find her place in the world." Shiina goes on to comically state the only reason he included the bath scene was for this purpose and pretend he had no ulterior motives. "The aim of this episode was to incorporate the differences between the two worlds into our daily lives, and to make readers think about which world they would prefer to live in. It is not that I wanted to depict the bathing scene of the princesses... No, I wanted to draw them (laugh), but in any case, I was a little reserved in showing too much skin... But I'm not the type of person who likes to depict sexy scenes... No, no, no, no.""
Per Furinkan: "The title, "Kokou" (虎口) means "the jaws of death" or "the tiger's den". Basically just a "dangerous place". It is an idiom that should not be taken literally (though it is written with the kanji for "tiger" and "mouth")."Also, this cover was apparently originally in full color.May 25th, 2022. Author's note:"The second volume is now on sale which features Miroku, Sango and Koga."
>>287663441Oh hey, you can see the original sign here. Anyway, here's another Furinkan note I felt like squeezing in since it came out around the time of the last chapter. "On his Twitter, Shiina discusses Rumiko Takahashi's comments and corrections on his rough drafts, "Most of the alterations from Takahashi-sensei are on the technical aspects of the story, and she often points out that it is difficult to understand what is happening and that she is lost as to what to expect when reading the story. When I correct the points that she mentioned, it clearly becomes easier to read, and I feel like a rookie. For the sake of promotion, let me give you a concrete example: the meal scene in the second chapter of the first volume. Moroha-chan is overjoyed to eat, and Setsuna-chan says, "Such a feast," but to Towa-chan, who grew up in the modern age, it's just an ordinary poor meal. When she eats it, my draft said "Towa's expression clouds over and she just goes silent. 'This means it doesn't taste good, right?' Yes," she said. But if you use the word "tasteless," it gives a bad impression, no matter how young the child is, so just use her facial expression here."" https://x.com/takashi_shiina/status/1520365623175708672?s=11&t=uIjIna0nWsBKEL8WUfV2TQBasically, Shiina didn't want to have Towa complain explicitly regarding the food, but Takahashi felt like it wasn't clear so they settled on having her say it was 塩辛い or "salty". Furinkan's summary is a bit muddy, honestly. You can tell Shiina's a bit more into the historical stuff as Inuyasha as a series didn't really dive into it.
>>287663581Not sure what term was used here. Furinkan didn't mention it. Oh and here's a note regarding the previous chapter I forgot to post:>>287661880"Shiina goes on to discuss the tidal flats depicted that no longer exist along the coastlines of Japan as they have since been paved over. He says he is thinking of the coastlines that could be crossed on foot at high tide like the one depicted in In This Corner of the World (この世界の片隅に/Kono Sekai no Katasumi ni) a 2016 anime film."
>>287663607
>>287663613Furinkan didn't bother but here's Wikipedia discussing Koshu gold:"The Kurokawa gold mine (黒川金山, Kurokawa Kinzan) was a gold mine located in the city of Kōshū, Yamanashi, Japan which was in operation for several hundred years from the Sengoku period into the modern era. ... After Takeda Shingen seized power from his father and unified the province, he developed the gold resources which were known to exist in various areas of the province, minting gold coins called "Kōshū kin", which were in great demand due to their purity."
>>287663655Per Furinkan: "理玖 "Riku" is a proper name. It is written with the kanji for "logic" (理) and "beautiful black jewel" (玖)."
>>287663671Per Furinkan: "りおん Rion's name is written in hiragana making it difficult to discern a meaning from it."
>>287663690
>>287663728Learn his ways, Takechiyo.
>>287663734Per Furinkan:"In his blog this month, Takashi Shiina discusses how he shared with Rumiko Takahashi his plans for the series and how giving her a rough sense of what he'd like to do up through the ending means that he has decided he'd like to try to surprise her with the "names" (rough layouts of the pages of the story) each month. He says he is not sure if suprising the original creator is a good idea however. He goes on to state that the "we're in another world" phase of the story is over and now is settling into the main plot. He explains that in the anime the characters came together after being apart, but in his story characters like Moroha and Setsuna were together, then separated, then came back together again and so he imagines them has having a very close relationship already by this point in the story ("like sisters" he states)."

>>287663793Takechiyo also functions as Kirara. And the tanuki sometimes. And Shippo sometimes. Though Shippo was even more limited.
>>287663808Per Furinkan:"Imagawa (今川), Oda (織田) and Takeda (武田) were some of the powerful clans during the Sengoku era of Japanese history. The Imagawa clan ruled over Suruga province (駿河国) where the half-demon princesses are flying over when they witness the distant battle. The Imagawa would eventually crumble and ally themselves with the Tokugawa clan. The Oda clan were ruled by Nobunaga, who Kagome mistook Amari Nobunaga for when meeting him during her early adventures in the past."That little case of mistaken identity was about as historical as Inuyasha ever really got.
>>287663837
>>287663847Tanuki cute.
>>287663928Furinkan notes that: "Konton (渾沌) means "chaos" or "confusion"."
>>287663837>Imagawa vs OdaHuh. Think this places Yashahime in 1560. Ish. Inuyasha's timeline can be a bit slippery.
>>287663941
>>287663951Per Furinkan: "Kyuki (窮奇) is written with the kanji for "destitute" (窮) and "strange" (奇)."
>>287664073Hmm.
>>287664084Sesshomaru has an unnamed two-headed dragon in Inuyasha. In the anime, they had Rin name it 阿吽 apparently.

>>287664406More Furinkan blog summaries:"Shiina mentions that Setsuna's upbringing was much more harsh in the anime compared with his manga stating she was raised around Kaede, Kohaku, Moroha and others in his version rather than the more isolated life she had in the anime. He said she has still become the "cool and strong Setsuna we know" regardless."
>>287664440
>>287664454This next bit is from Furinkan summarizing same blog post but it gets into some stuff that will follow in later chapters."Shiina explains that he removed Kyuki's wings because he felt that they got in the way, but they will reappear when she goes into battle. He wanted her to be a strategist to compliment Setsuna who is the brains of her team. He states that Moroha is compassionate and attentive to the others and Towa is more guarded with her thoughts. He compares Setsuna to Lui Bei (劉備/Ryubi in Japanese), Setsuna to Guan Yu (関羽/Kanu in Japanese) and Moroha to Zhang Fei (張飛/Chohi in Japanese). These are figures from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms in Chinese history. The three vowed to live and fight together and swore an oath known as the "Oath of the Peach Garden"."

>>287664606End of chapter. Per Furinkan summarizing the blogpost: "Shiina says that he very much enjoyed Sesshomaru's mother's argument with Zero in the anime, but he will use her to help explain her "silent son's motivations". He says Sesshomaru will have more to do in chapters ten or eleven. Shiina refers to Sesshomaru's mother (who is nameless) as "the Haman voiced woman". Sesshomaru's mother is played by Yoshihiko Sakakibara who also voices Haman Karn in Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam."

>>287664662I can't imagine she's used to such compliments.>>287664607Well, we've discussed this quite a bit over these threads but the term used is 結界, a Buddhist term borrowed from Middle Chinese which itself got it from Sanskrit. Honestly, the term in Buddhism is pretty grounded in reality and is regarding restricted access in temples, dojos, etc. However, its use in fantasy basically amounts to any separation between realities. Wikitionary refers to it as "on a small scale, meaning a projected energy barrier, force field, or shield; and on a larger scale, meaning a pocket universe, spiritual or otherwise". So, it can be a blockade but it can also be a wormhole. Either way, it is a split between two things.
>>287664745How pretty.
>>287664745so Barriers can be anything from a force field to a domain expansion, interesting
>>287664770Furinkan mentions that:"In his blog from June 30th Takeshi Shiina explains the tension of drawing Rumiko Takahashi's characters has started to subside and he feels less nervous now. He also mentions he has two more chapters until the first anniversary of the series. He explains that he wants a sisterly relationship to be established quickly between the girls and is trying to move that aspect along.Shiina mentions bringing up the fact that he wanted to have Sesshomaru's mother involved in the story more and says he was excited when he came up with the idea to have her be the one that introduced the dream butterfly. Shiina calls Sesshomaru's mother "Obotou-sama" (御母堂様). This is a polite way of refering to someone else's mother, but it does not have a concise way to translating it into English. He explains that he was hesitant with his plan in case Rumiko Takahashi vetoed the idea but Shiina explains he has been given a good deal of leeway in his ideas and he was very excited to be able to use Sesshomaru's mother because he likes her quite a bit. He also says having her involved will make it easier to address Sesshomaru's motivations."http://cnanews.asablo.jp/blog/2022/06/

>>287664824I wonder how reliable Takechiyo's internal clock is. I imagine people in earlier eras would be worse at estimating time by specific units, but by always having a clock near me, I'm pretty bad at estimating time anyway. >>287664793Pretty much. JJK even uses the same term fairly frequently when it comes to domains and whatnot. Though I long since stopped trying to keep track of how the systems in that series worked. This was long before I dropped the series entirely.
>>287664895
>>287664795>Obotou-samaInteresting, I thought it was pronounced Gobodou for some reason.
>>287664904Furinkan says that: "Moroha's attack is called "Heavenly Arrow of the Sliding Door" (天空の矢襖/Tenkuu no Yabusuma). The implication seems to be that it is an arrow that is searching for an exit (sliding door)."It seems VIZ either missed it or didn't really want to deal with it while localizing.
>>287664935
>>287664949
>>287664958Per Furinkan: "The whistling arrow that Moroha uses is not a fantasy item, it is something that exists in real life. Called a "whistling arrow" (鏑矢/kaburaya), this arrow emits a high pitched noise when fired through the air and is used to signal the beginning of battles."Though this one is clearly a bit different in terms of function. He states what he is currently writing for the eleventh chapter has been quite successful and he is looking forward to sharing that.Shiina concludes that although Yotsume escaped in this chapter he will die by the twelfth chapter and he apologizes if anyone was hoping he would somehow survive. The Japanese is "指をくわえて見ていることしかできん。" He then tells them it is an old phrase, but this should not be mistaken for something ancient given the time period of the story, it's actually an old phrase in the modern sense, a 20th century phrase that the girls just would not be familiar with."VIZ seemed to have localized this pretty loosely. Either that or Furinkan misunderstood the girl's confusion. Regardless, I believe this note from them refers to this page.

>>287666306>more documentation and evidence of how involved Rumiko was and how many corrections she madeSo you admit then that Rumiko’s original intention was always to have Sesshomaru be a gay fathercon? Glad we agree! :)Her telling Shiina to make sure to remind the audience that Sesshomaru is a fathercon is the same passive-aggressive manner she behaved when she made Shampoo as an expy of Lum and let the audience know how she REALLY felt about Lum replacing Shinobu as the heroine.Obviously she couldn’t tell Shiina to outright change the entire premise of Yashahime being a Sessrin fanfic because that was always Sumisawa’s entire gig (which Shiina himself credits as his original concept) and she signed a contract agreeing to let him publish his Sessrin fanfic and make them “official,” but that doesn’t mean she won’t signal to the audience that she disagrees with his interpretation of Sesshomaru and Rin’s relationship and Sesshomaru’s very character every chance she could possibly get through Shiina, same like how she’s done with Ranma and pretty much every work of hers post-UY where she let her feelings on her self-insert’s replacement with Lum be REALLY known in that same petty, passive-aggressive manner.
>>287667827It's probably just meant to be a name. Rather than the mom's specifically. That or we're just supposed to understand it's the same thing, but not to think about HOW they got it
Anyways my response to that one anon from last thread and general thoughts on this volume:>>287557830>Yes let's take arguably the most popular character and marry him to a self insert OC. Definitely a brilliant move. That never would have worked.Because turning one of the most beloved characters into a groomer pedo was so much better right? You saw how much backlash Yashahime got as a sequel just for that alone.>Kagura reincarnated as a human ala Kagome?>The thing that took 500 years to occur? You’re forgetting time travel exists as a concept in this franchise too retard, you know the thing Kagome did and the Yashahime trio are also doing?>Shiina very specifically requested how the designs should look. He had no input for Moroha so Rumiko did what she wanted. It's not that deep. You mean Sumisawa, and no actually the only instructions he ever gave to Rumiko on the twins designs was to draw “Black and White female Sesshomarus,” Rumiko could’ve very well drawn characters that reflected that request while still incorporating Rin into their designs, she deliberately chose not to, which honestly says alot already and also proves she had no idea who the mother was going to be until Sumisawa revealed it to her after the fact and Rin being Sesshomaru’s wife was never her idea in the first place.
>>287667947I honestly don't like Yashahime but the fact that you're spouting the same nonsense about Lum being the same as Shampoo and how editors forced her to change Lum into the protagonist makes it hard to root for you. This is before the nonsensical "if he cares so much about his dad, he's gay" thing.
Now, for my commentary on this volume…>>287662460>Teases a naked loli RinAnd people say Sessrin isn’t a ship for pedos…>>287665314>Rin being drawn so much younger than Kohaku who himself is only 11And people also wanna claim it’s appropriate for Sesshomaru to get together with Rin when he’s been in her life and was her canonical legal guardian when she was that young and he was a grown-ass 19 year old adult himself…Also what’s with Yashahime whether manga or anime constantly reminding the audience of child Rin? You would think if they wanted to avoid pandering to pedos and beat off the accusations that Sessrin is nothing but a grooming lolicon ship they would only feature ADULT RIN and stop constantly reminding the audience that 19 year old Sesshomaru took care of that little girl? It’s like they WANT the audience to think of Sesshomaru as a pedo, proof this is a ship that appeals only to lolicons.>>287664357>Shiina actually gives Moroha somewhat of a temper and has her beat up a random guy for his moneyAhh now there’s InuKag’s fiery personality that we all know and love finally shining through, I always did find it strange how in the anime despite being pretty much the perfect InuKag kid in all other ways both physically and personality-wise she seemed to lack her parents’ trademark short temper, almost to the point of passivity and even being a bit of a pushover. I absolutely hated how the anime seemed to delight in picking on Moroha and even outright hitting her and she just stood there taking it like a little bitch, it felt particularly mean spirited and a demonstration of Sumisawa’s hateboner of Inuyasha and Kagome on display, needless to say I much prefer the way Shiina is handling Moroha and the InuGang if nothing else.
>>287666075Per Furinkan: "This month's issue of Shonen Sunday S had an advertisement for volume 2 of the the Yashahime manga."
>>287664482>He states that Moroha is compassionate and attentive to the othersDefinitely takes slightly more after Kagome in personality, I wonder if that would-be son Rumiko had originally planned out would’ve been the opposite and taken slightly more after Inuyasha?>>287664895>Setsuna is “le smart” nowThis feels like more Sesshomaru glazing/wanking, where on earth would Setsuna even get her smarts from when neither Sesshomaru nor especially Rin were particularly intelligent?>>287666384>He could love our human mom but not us?Little does Towa know Sesshomaru doesn’t even love Rin, at least not romantically, even Sesshomaru’s seiyuu admitted in an interview that Sesshomaru only had kids with Rin as an experiment and that he’s “far from love” kek!>>287666881>Yashahime manga actually attempts to address the question on what happened to all the demons in the modern eraFucking finally, it’s about damn time! Seems like Rumiko had the same idea I always had and they just naturally got bred out by mating with the humans, hence their fear and hatred of half-demons here. Though it’s kinda funny the way this panel phrases it, like half-demons being born is a literal genocide, Demon Nazism anyone?>>287666990>Sesshomaru requests of his daughters to “dry Zero’s tears”This also feels OOC for Sesshomaru, since when was he ever particularly emotionally intelligent or wise? Quite the opposite in fact! (or even gave a single fuck about those outside his very small personal circle?)Commentary done.

Yes in fact, as you’ll soon come to see in the upcoming Yashahime chapters, also friendly reminder that Sesshomaru was like Jakotsu and originally supposed to be a woman but like with Jakotsu Rumiko couldn’t go through with Inuyasha seriously beating up on a woman so she turned him into the next best thing, that being a gay guy instead. Him having a father complex, the furisode he wears, his effeminate design, and the fact that he has no romantic interest in anyone are all meant to convey that he’s gay.
>>287668595I've read every interview and I fully understand that Shinobu originally being the protagonist and Lum ending up being the protagonist does not mean that Rumiko Takahashi was forced by editors to change who the protagonist was. Rumiko Takahashi wrote chapter upon chapter of romantic moments between Lum and Ataru and naturally felt that they were the ultimate conclusion for the manga. It is ludicrous to suggest it was all external pressure. And there is literally no evidence of Rumiko Takahashi intending for Sesshomaru to have originally been a woman. His father complex, furisode and no romantic interest is intended as a direct contrast from Inuyasha as a full blooded demon. As for his supposedly effeminate design, that's down to your notions of masculinity.
>>287666075Here is the cover of Shonen Sunday S where this chapter debuted.>>287668458I'll be real with you, I believe child Rin appears because this is a manga intended to show elements from the original series and as such, they feature flashbacks with the characters as they were in the original series. Kohaku met Sesshomaru's mother once in the series and when Rin appeared then, she was a child. So obviously a scene showing the characters in that moment would depict them as such.
>>287668643>I've read every interview and I fully understand that Shinobu originally being the protagonist and Lum ending up being the protagonist does not mean that Rumiko Takahashi was forced by editors to change who the protagonist was. Rumiko Takahashi wrote chapter upon chapter of romantic moments between Lum and Ataru and naturally felt that they were the ultimate conclusion for the manga. It is ludicrous to suggest it was all external pressure.Explain Ranma as a series and Shampoo’s character then? Why is it basically a reboot of the UY concept (only replacing aliens with trannies for the main comedic gimmick) if Rumiko was supposedly satisfied with the change in direction of UY?In fact another proof that exists within UY itself that proves she resented having to replace Shinobu with Lum is that Ataru’s personality also goes through a pretty drastic rework, he transforms from an only slightly perverted, mainly unlucky guy where his lack of luck was his main character trait into an all-out womanizing sleazeball and sex pest pretty much as soon as Lum replaces Shinobu in the heroine role and as his main love interest. Almost as if Rumiko was trying to punish Lum and make sure she wouldn’t have the same faithful guy Rumiko originally intended for Shinobu by turning him into an almost completely different character.>His father complex, furisode and no romantic interest is intended as a direct contrast from Inuyasha as a full blooded demon. How does any of that particularly relate to being a full demon though?
>>287668804Ranma 1/2 was Rumiko Takahashi doing comedy with a martial arts twist because she likes Jackie Chan movies. The comedy plays out a lot like UY because that's what she is good at and she enjoys writing tsunderes. Shampoo as a cute but deadly Chinese girl is a natural fit as she provides both martial arts, Chinese mysticism and a source of conflict. Ataru Moroboshi's personality rework has also been explained in interviews. The reason for the change is because she found that the main male protagonist's defining feature being bad luck meant he was a passive character rather than an active one. This meant that he wasn't as dynamic or interesting. The notion that she was punishing her fictional creation of Lum with this is nonsensical. It simply made for a more interesting back and forth between them. The concept of Sesshomaru as a representative of full-blooded demons has him be disconnected from "human concerns" like hunger, friendship, companionship. The furisode is highly formal and makes him look refined as opposed to our scrappy Inuyasha. He's more put together essentially. As for his father complex, it stems a traditional and dutiful outlook. As the full demon and the firstborn, he expects to be treated as the better of the two so when Inuyasha appears to receive preferential treatment, it is at odds with his philosophy. All of these aspects are intended to make Sesshomaru a foil to Inuyasha. You can easily interpret him as gay, but making up that Rumiko Takahashi intended for him to be female and changed her mind is not reasonable. It isn't as if Rumiko is particularly secretive about her thought process, she would've told us like she did with Jakotsu if that was the case.
>>287668928>She enjoys writing tsunderes. Shampoo as a cute but deadly Chinese girl is a natural fit as she provides both martial arts, Chinese mysticism and a source of conflict.Shampoo is actually a yandere not a tsundere, as is typical of Rumic girls in the rival role.>The furisode is highly formal and makes him look refined as opposed to our scrappy Inuyasha. He's more put together essentially. She could’ve chosen a different type of formal-looking furisode/kimono, not one worn by literal gay lovers of Samurai and male prostitutes only.>As for his father complex, it stems a traditional and dutiful outlook.Respecting your father a lot does not = a father complex, any kind of family-complex pretty much almost always indicates incestuous attraction, especially in anime (think of the terms brocon & siscon and how they’re usually used).>As the full demon and the firstborn, he expects to be treated as the better of the two so when Inuyasha appears to receive preferential treatment, it is at odds with his philosophy. He wasn’t just obsessed with his inheritance rights vs Inuyasha’s but was always obsessed with his father PERIOD even outside of Inuyasha, in fact I would go as far to say that Toga was the one single person Sesshomaru gave the most fucks about, everyone else was second to him, there’s a reason why the fandom likes to say he has daddy issues.
>>287668928>You can easily interpret him as gay, but making up that Rumiko Takahashi intended for him to be female and changed her mind is not reasonable. It isn't as if Rumiko is particularly secretive about her thought process, she would've told us like she did with Jakotsu if that was the case.I have no issues with Sesshomaru having always intended to be a gay guy without that original woman backstory, but I’m almost positive I saw Rumiko mention that him being planned to have been female actually was the case, maybe it was just some obscure interview or something (though I distinctly remember it was in one of the Wideban editions?) I don’t have the exact link to the direct quote like I do with Rumiko’s interview on Shinobu’s role but I’m clearly not the only one who supposedly imagined this information, see this link here: https://www.tumblr.com/clown-cult/689298705579442176/if-sessrin-was-always-intended-by-rumiko-like?source=shareYeah, yeah I know what you’re thinking, tumblr and all that, but it’s still proof it’s not just me making shit up and this was in fact an osmosis canon factoid about Sesshomaru. (The part I embezzled was Rumiko saying EXPLICITLY that Sesshomaru was the same as Jakotsu, still that’s what’s implied considering how she changed Jakotsu’s character and gender).
>>287667056Thank you for posting.
>>287669436I was not referring to Shampoo as a tsundere. I was referring to Akane. Shampoo makes Akane jealous, which makes her tsun. As for the rest, she did consider other outfits, but she seemed to like the look of the furisode. Check the wideban interview link in this. Fandom is quick to exaggerate and I can now vaguely see where you are coming from, but honestly, manga Sesshomaru primarily thinks in terms of his inheritance and the Dog General is only ever depicted as a giant dog. >>287669446Furinkan actually has the wideban edition interviews translated. It is possible you embellished a vague memory of this, which stated he originally showed a lot of skin. https://furinkan.com/iycompanion/manga/wide07.htmlAnd I see that it isn't exclusive to you. Fair enough. You know, I've seen you around these threads before and I feel like this one of the first times you seem to be engaged in good faith. It is kind of nice. I still disagree with a lot of your conclusions, obviously but still. Honestly, the Sesshomaru was always gay thing bothers me a lot less than the notion that Rumiko Takahashi supposedly spent her career writing the wrongs of UY's editorial and hates all attractive women.

Color me surprised. No, I was just keeping up with the news as the manga was coming out through Twitter/Tumblr/Reddit, I wasn’t consistently reading every chapter though.

>>287685661>Didn’t Sesshomaru try and propose to an 11 year old Rin in the equally non-canon Drama CD?Not what actually happens in that. While the words spoken can be interpreted romantically, they're also still neutral in language. And furthermore the CD goes out of it's way to emphasize how much agency Sesshomaru is giving Rin, whereas Grooming is about stripping someone of agency. Try again.>No denial that they only read the stuff they could use to push their agendaStill not surprised.

>>287685875>whereas Grooming is about stripping someone of agency.Grooming is simply an adult with a large age gap preying on a minor, nothing more and nothing else.
>>287689202I suggest you look up what grooming actually means before you go throwing that word around, because that's not what grooming is at all.

>>287685608>>287686700The author has a new Manga but it barely gets attention. I don't understand why /a/ doesn't follow all the authors that have story of making great series. There are plenty of authors that only get 1 series translated and their other works get ignored.By the way the new Manga is called Kaihen no Mahoutsukai
