I was rewatching Dangaioh recently, mostly for the opening theme. Started KO Beast, and somehow I never realized it was a mecha show. Reminds me a bit of Ryuu Knight so it's up my alley, at least.

>>281779163
It's more about access to easy money anyway. Even if Japan gets another bubble economy, I doubt we'll see the same sort of speculative investment in anime again, so there would have to be some sort of new, likely dubious, funding scheme to prop up the industry. And there's also the issue of taste and market demand that would need to shift if you're after a certain type of look.

I want to get into retro OVAs. But every time I try to, all the recommendations I get are like Ogerish videos, and then all the modern discussion around them is exactly how people talked about gore videos on that site. Maybe I want good animation and characters instead.
>>
>>281781413
This thread has had multiple quality suggestions. I don't know where you've been reading but you're looking the wrong place.
>>
I actually have a certain fondness for the one off OVA. Even if they don't tell a full story by themselves I think there's something neat about just seeing a set up, some characters and a fantasy world they're in. It's like reading an old pulp story.
>>
>>281781439
I'm not sure when 4chan gave more hinged recommendations than major social media platforms that are meant to have stricter moderation. But here we are. I noticed a lot of Tenchi. I love Tenchi, perfect choice.

We give better recommendations (when allowed) BECAUSE we're not as strictly moderated. We're not beholding to just whatever is popular trendy or even what sounds NICE. We're here to talk about shit we actually give a fuck about. And since we got at least a few old fucks still around we might know a thing or two about a thing or two.

I know nobody was really expecting media preservation or the advance of home video technology back then but it's just a bit sad in hindsight how many things are effectively forgotten to the ages. Hell even finding decent quality images of things can be a challenge on its own.
>>
>>281774587
Why do so many OVAs have amazing animation but mediocre stories?
>>
>>281786373
most of NGE's inherited ideas are pretty easy to track
>Shinji is boy Nadia. Because he's a boy he gets look down on for things that characters tolerated or saw as endearing in Nadia
>Gendo is 'Nadia's dad but evil' on paper and visually he draws from Professor Shizuma from Giant Robo and Doctor Tenma from Astro Boy. but he also has archtypal ties to the captain in Space Battleship Yamato who was the inspiration for Captain Nemo/Nadia's dad (along with the original Captain Nemo by Orson Welles)
>SEELE are the Neo-Atlanteans from Nadia represented by Monoliths from Space Odyssey
>lore-wise, evas and angels are both 'giant warrior gods' from nausicaa. visually and aesthetically, the evas resemble and fight like Casshern Neo Human, in no small part due to much of the combat scenes being done by Tatsunoko
>the bridge scenes, launch sequences, OST, OP, and overall aesthetic come from Gerry Anderson's UFO. NERV is functionally the same as SHADO
>Rei is based on Lt. Gay Ellis, a SHADO operative on the moonbase in UFO
>Kaworu is Satan/Akira from Devilman
>Instrumentality is inspired by the Ide in Space Runaway Ideon
>Second Impact comes from the planetary devastation in Nausicaa and Future Boy Conan
>the aesthetics of the angels and all the cross imagery comes from Ultraman
also mention to Laputa Castle In the Sky which is the memetic link between Future Boy Conan and Nausicaa
>>
>>281786752
Because shorter run times mean they can better focus the budget but also means they don't have as much space to develop their plots. And what do you even mean by "mediocre" stories anyways. Most of the time they do exactly what they set out to do to a pretty decent extent. I swear the internet has turned every dullard with an opinion into a critic who wouldn't know a story if a novel smacked them in the head.
>>
>>281786752

I'd seen her movie at some point and just assumed the idea was she existed in an AU timeline where she was Maetel if Maetel became Harlock, so to speak

Watch Nightwalker, it started out a 4 episodes long OVA, but a TV producer liked what he saw enough to turn it into a 13 episodes long show so they used the first 4 episodes originally produced to be OVAs as the show's first arc and then produced 9 more episodes with a TV budget so the show would be 13 episodes long, I'm just saying this because while the show takes a HUGE fall in terms of quality after episode 4 they didn't tone down any of the blood and nudity the OVAs had surprisingly enough so the episodes produced for TV still have gore and tits

After checking the credits it's no wonder I thought of Ryu Knight, Ito Takehiko was character designer for both. The credits for KO Beast are kinda nuts, Ito (who also did Outlaw Star) is co-creator with the guys behind Saber Marionette J, among other things. It's a team-up of standard-bearers of the 90s. A certain type of standard anyway.

Especially V-Darn, I don't think you'll find a Human (elf) who looks like this in another decade.

Add another one for the desperately needs a BD list. Do you ever really worry that old media isn't becoming lost so much as it becomes forgotten? Studio fire catches and all the masters are lost? Zeorymer moves a fair amount, they throw in some cuts that are stills and pulled cels between fully animated stuff, its just that the layouts and timing often are functional but not that interesting, and the choreography is a lot of blasting beams back and forth. 45 booruable cuts for a 4 episode OVA isn't slideshow tier.

I even drew Ihrie along with some other studies but I plan on drawing more of this style. Is there anything more like this? I need to watch Record of Lodoss Wars. Something about characters, and their "gritty" looks and that magic system where its a full world but magic isnt OP, and their heavy chest plate armors is just gets all the right itches for me. It makes me wanna do my own Ruin Explorer manga.
>>
>>281808813
I thought it was a solid three-parter. It made the Lejiverse feel interconnected, provided some cool background information about the Cosmo Dragoon, and I liked the way it utilized the whole time-machine gimmick to show us the events of the first episodes from a different perspective (which truly makes you feel for Tetsuro), which also served to reinforced the theme that the choices we make are what define us as individuals.

It tells a simple story but honestly it's practically a master class in economic story telling and pacing. In just four episodes it manages to introduce all of it's characters, give them stand out personalities, manages to bring them all together, turning rivals into genuine friends in a way that feels organic and subtle and have a satisfying pay off. Even the villain gets a moment where his fall to the dark side feels sympathetic without trying to justify it. It's just good. You could probably edit together into a single movie it feels that tight.

I know they released novels, but I can't remember when the last one was....
>>281823406
I'm well aware the show is based on the RPG replays, and novelizations as I just told anon above. I was simply wondering how much Japanese media is ripping of Lodoss and in turn DnD in creating their fantasy stories.

>I wonder what happened to Japanese writers, since I haven't heard of any successful novel in the past 15 years.

You mean the Lodoss ones? Or some other kind? If you mean novels in general then you haven't been looking. Haruki Murakami has had like 3 or 4 very successful novels since 2013. The author of Welcome to The NHK just released a remake novel last year. You probably think no Jap winning the Nobel in literature= no books.

LD master race chads stand up. I mean there’s really no point to them anymore besides nostalgia because even the very best LDs were DVD quality. But man I loved the big boxes with the big inserts, such a nicer collectible format.
>>
>>281825234
This is one of the things that bugs me about blurays. the cases are so.... in inconspicuous. A VHS tape or a DVD box set? Those jump out. You could be across the room thinking about something else and then think "Ah I want to watch Slayers again."
>>
>>281824685
Ah, OK.
>>281824775
Yeah, it might’ve been weird but I really wish Laios and Marcille would’ve dated in Dungeon meshi at the end. I really wanted it to happen for some reason. I know there’s a book 100 years after Lodoss war with Deedlit as the main character, do you know if it’s ever specified if Parn took her virginity?
>>
>>281823920
Just watched the first episode of Dangaioh. What a quintessential 80s experience. 11/10 visuals and designs, but almost no coherent plot, that also jumps from place to place in an instant. Loved the sudden character change of the professor, which gave me saturday morning cartoon feelings. The minor antagonist has one of the most laughable motives ever (I just hate you), which actually is in conflict with his main goal of being a badass space pirate. But at least the stakes and factions are now clear. I expect ep 2 and 3 to be a bit more stringent.

Watched Akira for the first time last month.
Liked:
>the soundtrack
>the goddamn fantastic animation
>the heartbreaking relationship between Kaneda and Tetsuo
Weak points:
>the resistance subplot ultimately going nowhere
>the military stuff could have been better paced

From the start, Tetsuo was presented as the weakling of the gang, but as he discovers his true power he is corrupted, to the point he lashes out against his own friends due to his deep-seated resentment. Meanwhile, you have Kaneda who is now starting to understand the kind of person Tetsuo always has been but can't possibly stand up to his power.
The ending also got me for that very reason. Seeing Tetsuo lose control of his power and finally realizing that he's fucked up beyond repair while Kaneda tries in vain to help him despite everything Tetsuo did affected me more than it had any right to. Not to mention the scene where Kaneda sees Tetsuo's memories and discovers Tetsuo's long-standing feelings of respect and resentment was powerful, at least to me. When Tetsuo is finally taken away, I couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor bastard.

Let us not forget EXTREME hard-working sweatshop work ethics far worse than already excruciating current digital animation sakuga rut sustained this cel-animation. 80s Japanese asset bubble positivity kept the style going, but after it collapsed, it was a matter of time. I am 100% sure and many Japanese guys attest that the workers in the 90s were the most suffering people in the industry.

You say that because you are a Westerner. The Japanese collectivism and its pre-modern virtue made them work no matter how grotesquely the upper guys exploit them with the ethics and they wilfully accepted it, it was a different time. East Asians and those who happen to know this culture will understand it. Of course it doesn't work anymore.

Not shit talking the Japanese and the East, the tradition is good. But the thing is, the surge of neolib culture swept the entire world including China in the 80s, so after the Japanese asset bubble collapsed they took desperate measures and exploited the workers accordingly. The tradition couldn't defend them or match the rapidly changing society so the defenseless and clueless workers including cel animu industry assblasted by that, same old story around that time.

I'd still call Ruin Explorers Sword and Sorcery. High Fantasy tends to work on a grander scale. Lodoss would be HIGH fantasy because it deals with wars between kings and nations and a world threatening plot. Sword and Sorcery is more personal. Quests for personal wealth and revenge. Maybe there's a large scale in the background but the plot is more character driven.
>>
>>281840967
look at how cool Ganondorf is
>>

I'd also argue that high fantasy has more dignity and operatic melodrama was SS tends to err towards mucking about in the blood and filth just trying to survive while dreaming of actually having something to show for it one day
>>
>>281841173
I don't know if I'd say that's a prerequisite as much as just how both tended to go. Conan is brutal as hell but the stories themselves can often be very poetic. Though that might say more to REH's writing ability.

Also on note was kinda dissatisfied with them dropping Cross fight (one of the greatest super robot songs ever composed) in favor of the typical 80s ova song that’s unrelated to the story and starts with “let’s all go get drunk”. Yeah I too liked dangaioh, don’t watch great
>>
>>281847939
Shame that episode 3 is just an upscale since the 35mm film was lost for it.
>>
>>281848081
>audio play
nice. Thanks anon. This is just the right thing after finishing the last episode.
>dropping Cross Fight
Yeah, that was pretty bad decision. The godlike opening was what sold me on watching Dangaioh in the first place. Though I'll be honest. While I was pleased with it, if it were 30 years ago and the OP would have sold me in the more literal sense into buying the OVA releases, then I would have been somewhat disappointed. Especially with the first episode.

Ah that's the reason the batch had that one just in DVD quality. What a shame to hear. The visuals really were outstanding.

I watched Black Magic M-66. It was pretty good. I liked that it told a complete enough story to feel satisfying while still leaving it open enough that they could make more if they choose to.

The thing that stood out the most to me was how the bodies were drawn. It felt like the artists and animators actually knew human anatomy. Just something about the proportions and muscles that felt realistic, or more real than what we see in modern anime.

>half of the episodes are comedy filler. The cast noticing this
>Gil Berg having a secret crush an Mia Alice
What a perfectly wacky way to end it.

Yeah, the OP was the main reason that I was taking a second look at it recently. Didn't know about the audio play, but I'm also not surprised either. I got the feeling that the creators wanted to make more especially from the way episode 3 ends but the financials probably didn't pan out.

They showed Lodoss too. I was already just starting to get into DnD and liked fantasy books so that was a major discovery for me. I found that lot of anime fans back then were also genre fans looking to get more of that.

A lot of people were pretty hard on the TV series but I liked it okay. Certainly a step down and Spark's an idiot but it was more Lodoss and more fantasy. Could have probably done without the little chibi shorts at the end of the episode. Kind of a mood whiplash when something significant or emotional happens and then you're hit in the face with SD wackiness. Could have used the extra minutes to give the proper episodes more budget or time too. But I like that it was a more complete adaptation of the novels. Intros a 10/10 too.

Black Magic has pretty good character animation. I would argue it's also better in that regard than a lot of otherwise more stylish or more smoothly animated OVAs of its day as well. People move with a sense of weight and their personality and emotions are conveyed in their movements.

Wouldn't surprise if they decided to just keep the movie in a vault for some reason. It happens. The first Dragon Quest Dai movie for example was shown in 1991 and never got a home release until 2020.

There's 3 Nuku Nuku series, the OVAs, the TV series which tries to be a wacky over the top comedy with Nuku Nuku as the city's resident super hero and Nuku Nuku DASH which tries to be a romantic drama with some comedy
>>
>>281850177
NukuNuku OVAs are 8/10 for me. Nice, fun short show.

NukuNuku TV is "comedy", but never laughed once. Its the type of wackyanime comedy that its just plain cringe and unfunny. 4/10.

NukuDash has a real good Opening, love the song, but the show its just plain boring. Also 4/10. I say, dont waste your time, just watch the OVAs.

I like the more arabian palace design. You know a lot of older portal fantasy (I refuse to use that other word) really did tend to avoid the medieval Europe style. El hazard had this, Rayearth was crystals every which way and Escaflowne while having some traditional palaces also had kick ass floating fortresses

BariBari or Boogie?
>>
>>281857862
The variety was nice. In general a lot of older portal fantasy felt more fantastical/creative. I suppose it not being THE trend at the time meant that the people who were interested in making one ended up being more passionate.
>>
>>281858055
Yeah, the concept of Stranger in a Strange land is one of the classic forms of stories so generally if someone did it back then it was part of a bigger story they were planning or there was more of a point to it.
