Chapter 31: Neoliberalism and the End of an Era
Previous chapter:>>281800922
Only five years to go.
>>281827718Have they checked underground
I'm beginning to get sad that we have to cut this short
>>281827766Wonder if these two could go out for a drink after all's said and done
>>281827780The Northern Territories never existed

>>281828048Th-this is MY track! IT WAS MADE FOR ME!
>>281828597I'm more of a Friedman guy myself.
>>281827977Thanks OP>Who's your favorite politician?Myself in the future when I rule over the world
>>281828092Everything was great and perfect in the good old days, so it must be true.
Have you read this book?
>>281827788Did they check the northern territories?
>>281827977Thanks anon>Who's your favorite politician?No such thing
>>281827977>Who's your favorite politician?i don't know but this Koibuchi guy has style and charisma in droves from what i am seeing

>>281827861Comedy mangaka
>>281827977Thanks, OP.
>>281827977>Who's your favorite politician?pic related, simply because he still manages to piss off both left and right to this day.
>>281831241>the more humans it pisses off the better the policyHow anti-human of you
>>281827968was this guy the OG trump?
>>281832256Trump doesn't have style.
>>281833603also no leadership
>>281827977Thanks OP>Who's your favorite politician?HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
>>281832256the og trum was dick cheyneyand really ronald reagan was cheyney mk. 2, the bushes were mk.3 and mk.4, and trump the mk.5 model coppled together from whatever spare jingoism they had laying around at the back of the corrupt businessman in the whitehouse factor
>>281827937>He's right about this>Even in current year
>>281827691LET'S GHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
>>281834962no
I want to go back to comfy Ito horror. The horrors of the real world are too depressing and boring
>>281827857>twoI see three bros
>>281827977I'm a big fan of Andrew JacksonMan was a nutcase that duelled anything that looked at him wrong, to the point of the resulting lead poisoning from being shot so much is a suspected prime contributor to his mental declineThere's a story that he really wanted someone dead once so he stood still and let the guy shoot him so he could line his shot up properly to make sure he shot the bastard dead
>>281827977Koizumi’s nemesis left quite the impression
>>281827937Sounds based to me. We need him back.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVSV60lRNPoPostan legendary video
>>281829438No, but I watched the documentary.
>>281827901Fun fact: Japan has effectively had a one-party system for decades, with the LDP almost being continuously in charge. It has different factions, but still.
>>281831540I mean in the sense his policies can not be shoved into a box and labeled good or bad by either side. his policies were actually incredibly popular with the lower classes, to the point he won a fair election after a decade of being an authoritarian dictator.
>>281838260modern Brazilian history and politics sound wild based on what I know of it Also interesting seeing a manga mention neoliberalism by name, since I usually hear that term mentioned in the west by left-leaning people to criticize modern day politics
>>281827727Takamura is starting to get bored of this.
>>281837600
>>281827819I'll take dancing girls over FEUDAL JAPAN any time of the day!
>>281827861Who are these two?
>>281827901Comedy mangaka
>>281828597Under neoliberal dogma everything is an individual problem and all you do is micromanagement. Doesn't help when you when do math under assumptions that conflict with reality. Keynes is not without flaw but at least his bird's eyes view and pragmatic approach kept things going pretty stable after the war.
>>281827937
>>281838750Thomas-san and Percy-san
I miss Oshikiri, things were better under Oshikiri
>>281839031lol, skublets are pathetic.
>>281839031You can just tell this was made by a seething skubfag.
>>281833603>>281833675trump literally became president of the most powerful country in history just by charisma alone. He's not even smart
Where's the nigga Mo anon?
>>281839757I'm worried too.
where's my nigga takeo?
>>281843613
>>281843662>cute Accurate
>>281838420South American history/politics in general seems very interesting and I wish I paid more attention in college.
>>281801468>what are some other gripping workplace dramas?there's always your trustworthy, reliable salaryman, Shima Kosaku
>>281845154also Kaji Ryuusuke no Gi by the same author which deals with actual politics and a more seedy protagonist than shima too bad it's not fully translated. btw shima not only would've solved the northern territories dispute by now but also made a profit from it.
There's something incredibly funny about this entire manga being Yuki as the ultimate good boy diplomat who can never do anything wrong, until he casually admits he spent years continuously in breach of trust and engaging in a money laundering scheme
>>281845413Yeah, but when he did it it was for THE SACRED NORTHERN TERRITORIES AND THE HOLY PROPHET SUZUKI MINEO (PRAISE UNTO HIM!)! Not for some petty reason like, um... uh... wait a moment...
>>281845413sometimes you have to be corrupt so your coworkers don't hate you so i can't really blame him
>>281845381Based shima anon.
where's my nigga mo?
>>281848530Taken by the spiral
>>281845381If it were Shima, he'd have made the woman from the honeypot fall hopelessly in love with him and leave behind an illegitimate child who later becomes the Russian ambassador to Japan responsible for resolving the Northern Territories dispute by allowing Hatsushiba factories to break ground on the islands.
Where the FUCK is OP
>>281848530At the consulate, exchanging for kroner.>>281827977Late but TY OP. Also thanks for the mini-Mo dump Wednesday. [spoiler[Is that the preamble to Shoulder-a-Coffin Kuro?[/spoiler]
>>281848922Do I legally need to answer that question?
>>281849002>
>>281849002No, it's part of a longer flashback about the early stages of Kuro's journey. Volume 2 or 3, I think.
>>281848922Wouldn't answering that question compromise national security?
>>281848922Oppurg
Chapter 32: The Black Colonel (Part One)
>>281850127>"And then the prosecutor gave me a sloppy toppy with tongue. The End."
>>281850162>The real hell is being RussianI mean, he's not wrong
Done. This dump is dedicated to the brave mujahideen fighters of afghanistan. What the hell is happening to Russia?See you tomorrow!
>>281850282We financed Osama? Wtf is this real?
>>281850335>>281850360>"What the hell is happening to Russia?"The same thing as usual
>>281836413Wait, Abe is his Suzaku?
>>281850453Russians don't really drink that much anymore
>>281850223>>281850313Thank you ruble committee.
>>281850552And American's aren't buying guns and Bongs don't need licences.
>>281850400it's a lot more convoluted than that, bin laden was mainly a money mark during the war. the real rise of the taliban and al qaeda happened in the post-war anarchy
>>281827977>Who's your favorite politician?Legitimately? LMAOOOFor curiosity sake though, Teddy Roosevelt was a pretty interesting guy. Felt like a politician that couldn't really exist anymore, so he has an almost mythical feel to him
>>281850750deliberately cultivated
>>281850769No doubt. The propaganda never stops, even after death, but still interesting to read about some of his naturalist proposals
>>281850335VODKA!https://youtu.be/e7kJRGPgvRQ?si=tUYF_LLGTwFaFoZF
>>281848530Where Tomie fears to look
>>281850400Operation Cyclone was the program funneling military aid to the region, starting with the Carter administration and continuing under Reagan and Bush Sr. Whether Bin Laden directly received aid from the U.S. is unsurprisingly a matter of debate, but he was involved in hostilities against the Soviets and the conflict played an important role in his rise to prominence in the Arab world.
>>281848530Mosman
>>281850360Thanks OP>What the hell is happening to Russia?Nothing good as always
>>281850400Many of the world's terrorist organizations were funded by American TLAs hoping to topple the local regime. The more you know.
>>281850658what did russia do to this nigga that he hated them so much?
>>281850127>Why are you so strong?"Because I have friends who believe in me."
>>281850360Thanks OP.
>>281852319just a common side effect of interacting with russians
So, this manga was based on some corrupt political who try to paint him as doing the right thing?
>>281850103
>>281850121Yuki cannot be innocent man
>>281850137I wonder how long it's been
>>281850173Is that Putin
>>281850223Earnestly trying to fucking kill you maybe
>>281850191Albert looks trustworthy.
>>281850282Bin Laden jumpscare
>>281850268>>281850282Obligatory
>>281850360Thanks OP The great grinding wheel, same as the rest of us
>>281827861train mangaka
>>281850360Thanks anon>What the hell is happening to Russia?A special military operation

>>281850360Thanks, OP>What the hell is happening to Russia?picrel
>>281850103All dailies are connected.
>>281850360Thank you for posting, OP.
>>281850152It's crazy how all the others faiths are very pro-betrayal and lying.
>>281855693I remain forever baffled by Russia as a nation. How can the country produce such amazing writers, philosophers, musicians, mathematicians, engineers and chemists and still be such a fucking disaster perpetually?
>>281828597retards are still confusing Keynesianism with Neo-Keynesianism
>>281827968What a Chad
>>281850152OK I didn't expect him to be Christian
>>281850282Osama mention!
>>281850127>Why are you so strong?"Well my cat got really mad at me when I thought about selling out my friend"
>>281827977I have zero context or knowledge about this series but I enjoyed reading this chapter, might go and read the whole thing now. Didn't expect something like this from Ito.
>>281857971It's a really big country. It's statistically impossible to NOT have some amazing citizens.
>>281850360Thanks, OP.
>>281853585One of his doubles
>>281858558Kek
>>281857971because there was money and political will directed towards art and science, first with the effort to copy other european courts and later with the soviets trying to win ww2 and cold war.
>>281855534>goofus launders money on the ruble comitee>gallant works diligently to bring the northern territories back
>>281827819does he need to be spread eagle?
>>281857971>Giant country with plenty of natural resources to exploit for profit>During USSR there was heavy push for industrialisation and sciences, so a lot of effort was put to build them>USSR was also heavily promoting the superiority of communist culture so they invested heavily in party approved arts >The country also has always had giant levels of corruption so the wealth is unequally distributed and rich people tend to like to use money for the arts etc. because that’s how you buy yourself prestige
>>281850121>we're 100% BLACK
>>281857971russia seems ok now
>>281862711Trolley problem
>>281850103>>281850121Must be a hard life looking like that
>>281850360>What the hell is happening to Russia?I'm not sure anyone has ever understood.
>>281865313Don't be racist, anon.
Chapter 33: The Black Colonel (Part Two)
He's mostly crying about the rampant gay rape in the Russian military though
Done. Have you ever taken a human life?
>>281869601Unfortunately, they're not wrong
>>281869601baby BTFO'd
>>281869651>didn't get ripped to shreds by gunfire So they were wrong?
>>281869691Afghanis, not even once
>>281869669did this kind of shit really happen or is it just soviet propaganda?
>>281869700What the fuck Ito
>>281869972I think American soldiers also claim similar stuff
>>281869708Yeah fuck those babies
>>281869760Hell of a thing to discuss in front of your girl (I assume)
>>281869807Gonna get some mileage out of this in Keng/a/n
>>281869794>it sounds like Albert went through an even worse hell than you Yeah no shit
>>281869821book club readinghttps://archive.org/details/The_Bear_Went_Over_the_Mountain_Soviet_Combat_Tactics_in_Afghanistan_Les_Grauhttps://archive.org/details/DTIC_ADA376862
>>281869993damn i didn't knowi think all the world should unite and destroy afghanistan
>>281869821Thanks OP Not that I'm aware of
>>281869972there's a lot of hearsay and certainly things get exaggerated in the telling and retelling, but it's also certain there were a lot of tit-for-tat atrocities documented on both sides. don't believe any specific story without proof, but the general character of the war was a tremendously brutal one, setting the stage for the arguably even more cruel civil war after.
>>281850400Not exactly, most of the groups that were funded would become the Northern Alliance, the extremist groups came later and overwhelmed them then took all their weapons.
>>281870048>sher khanThe tiger?
>>281869821thanksno but i think i could handle being in a war. The concept of PTSD has always felt weird to me like I'm not being edgy but "oh no i killed a person i'm going insane!". Who tf cares? people die all the time, just move on
>>281870277Unironically, you have to experience it to understand.
>>281827861The reason why we shifted from Keynes to Hayek was because the Keynesian framework was unable to deal with stagflation during the 1970s. The problem was the prescription that we should save during periods of prosperity and then save during crisis, but governments want to keep high growth all the time, so when crises did hit they had no room to move. That's why austerity at that time was neccessary to readjust the economy long term. Highly politically unpopular, but what's the alternative here? And that goes into Hayek's point that it's primairly excessive government intervention (like low interest rates now) that leads to distortions in the economy later that are hard to fix. That's not to say markets can't produce problems, but it is much easier to resolve market problems than it is to resolve government problems.IMO, the real faults lie more in trade policy where we ignored Keynes regarding the Balance of Payments, the WTO and IMF have no real way to discipline surplus nations, which essentially puts the open Western economies at the mercy of the industrial policies of neo-mercantalist nations like China. Of course, I would imagine that the author here would be a big proponent of unfettered free trade today given what Trump is doing now.
>>281827836>Koibuchiretarded translator or censored manga?
>>281870596Most of the politicians have slightly altered names.
>>281862958лоллмао
>>281869661What a cutie
>>281870668huhyuki too?
>>281869746Are the Japanese so peaceful they don't even know about stoning that Yuki had to explain for the readers?
>>281869560>not suspicious at all>>281869669"Tell the n00b to lower his RPG!">>281869807Fonzie really went downhill after jumping the shark.
>>281870917Yep, the real one is called Masaru Sato
>>281862958[Citation needed]
>>281869821Thanks OP>Have you ever taken a human life? Not yet, billions one day
>>281871092>SatoWhat a basic name
>>281870668I think specifically, anyone based on a real Japanese person, politician or not, has a pseudonym, although a most are pretty transparent (Suzuki Muneo -> Tsuzuki Mineo). Meanwhile most, if not all of the foreigners keep their original names. It's mostly a legal thing.
>>281869601>>281869588I expected the baby to lay on a mine so it goes boom if either crushed or picked up.
>>281872667That or an ambush. People were tame back then.
>>281872860Yeah, I was expecting:>Slow down / stop to look at the baby>ATGMs take out the first and last vehicles in the convoy to trap them>Start picking off the survivors from elevated positions
>>281870277it's more like a reflex your brain connects triggers to terrible experiences and starts hyping you up for flight or fight, for example imagine you are in a modern trench and for 2 months straight you get used to the sound of buzzing drones dropping grenades or mines near you or the whistling sound of artillery and their shockwaves rattling your brain, once you rotate to normal life your brain will keep connecting random buzzing sounds or whistling to the experience of bombs dropping near you, your body tenses reflexively for a shockwave that never comes, etc.
>>281869700Horror mangaka.
>>281873707And now it's even more horrific for being true
>>281872860>Afghanistan then: Put baby in the middle of the road as bait>Afghanistan now: Wear baby as shield against bulletsWhat went wrong
>>281873834It works.
>>281870995The Japanese had some brutal execution methods, but I don't think stoning was something they used.
Shame we're so close to the end, I'd have liked to see this through
>>281869760>free sex in the soviet barracksthat's one way to put it

>>281869821Thanks, OP.
>>281872397To be fair, "Yuki Mamoru" is an incredibly basic name, at least for a shounen manga character.
>>281871860cheap food, cheap house prices, cute womenThe only problem could be if they keep declaring war to countries
I mean, i remember the story where injured soldiers was used as bait for booby trap in vietnam war
>>281869661Thank you for finding my baby that I misplaced in the middle of the road, kind soldier

Im here asking once more how much Junji Ito is there left?
>>281879945Roughly speaking, around 2 months.
>>281879945at least 3
>>281880569Also, there are mostly serializations left, not many oneshots

>>281890083>cheap oil and gasTheir refineries aren't doing too well at the moment
>>281890675They will probably rebuild them more in the east when Ukraine can bomb them, China will love having the entire industry closer to them
>>281891133They'll have an interesting time of that. The cracking towers are lostech to them, and those tend to be what gets droned
>>281889292The face of someone who should have exercised more often.

>>281886845>Masaru Satois it just me or he doesn't look japanese at all?
>>281892885The easy answer is all their resources. A lot of other nations find it frustrating how Russia has a vast landmass of natural resources and is viewed as pretty inefficient at putting them to use.
>>281886845Ito got the eyebrows right.

One of the best parts of the manga is that you can't tell whether Yuki is bullshitting the reader or whether the various business and political figures were bullshitting him. Even when it's obvious something is off about what's being presented to the reader, you can't know how much of it is due to faulty memory, a self-serving interpretation of real events, genuine ignorance or a deliberate attempt to hide the truth.

Northern Territories status?
>>281908983Take it easy Takamura
>>281909063ainu claimed
>>281909063Still Russian last I checked. With no intentions of giving them away. That island chain is beautiful and from what I've read the Russians' restrictions on visitors have kept the place pristine.
>>281909115they sold them to china
>>281906191During his time in Moscow I get the impression he turned from honest and earnest to being another corrupt state diplomat and came to understand the system. But I think he's naive about excuse of doing all of this for the sake of the national interest being something that a jury would accept. By that logic he could embezzle up to whatever value he thinks his self-appointed mission is worth if he thinks it could help reclaim these territories and sign a peace treaty, even if it never works out. Which it never will because the people on the other side are just using him to get information, fancy dinners and nice gifts at conferences.
>>281906191>>281909206I think it's a classic case of main character syndrome (just more difficult to detect because we're reading a manga, based on a book, where he _is_ the main character), he figures that everything he does is justified and reasonable because he's the hero of the story, Mineo is his wise mentor, and everyone who disagrees with him is petty or corrupt (despite very often doing either the exact things that he does, or actually doing their job without engaging in questionable acts).
>>281909263Very Japanese mindset. I think this is why Viktor thought he'd appreciate the kamikaze comment.
>>281909278Yep, Yuki was just a chuuni the whole time
National Interest status?
>>281909263I read Trap of the State after following these threads for a while. It's frustrating to read, he never comes to terms with the idea that he misused significant amounts of taxpayer money in pursuit of a cause that was never going to succeed. But it's also an interesting read and despite everything he'd seen and done he had optimism for a post-communist Russia. But people like Albert are the closest he ever got to the real "people" of Russia who suffer poor quality of life with very little to look forward to. Most of the people he knew and worked with were operating their own agenda. Maybe that's why he was so eager to make friends with the students? Which as an academic is something you really shouldn't do.
>>281909063Still russian due to the dastardly meddling prosecution and their hatred of national interest.
>>281909418>optimism for a post-communist RussiaWhich turned out so well.
>>281909447Yeah, this goes back to my impression that he's naive. He makes a comparison between post WW2 Japan and post communist Russia, saying that an enormous national upheaval *can* ultimately lead to a better society for the people. But you have to go through hardship first and bring up an entirely new generation. We're well past due on that for the Russians.
>>281909474It's shows a complete ignorance of Russian history on his part. If you take away the specific labels and just look at how power, money, etc. flows through the system Post communist Russia is functionally Russia under the communists which was functionally Russia under the tsars.
>>281898446very valuable example of how 'people' can be completely unable to understand a situation because of their built-in cultural lens
