I'd say watch the first two arcs of Index before jumping into Railgun, especially because the Sisters Arc is much more rewarding to watch in Railgun first. I just started rewatching index tonight and it's incredbly sad how little animation there is in anime today.Like scenes were actually animated back then! Characters expressed themselves! There wasn't any 3D shit!

There is a point in the story where there is literally zero room for any spin offs of recurring characters, but there's some wiggle room leading up to it.

The Railgun girls can just have a day of nonsense and deal with some silly shit without it being interrupted by the main plot baring down, in fact they can do it for several episodes in a row. I feel like Index would be better if it had more slice of life episodes where characters just exist in this world, Academy City is an amazing place that deserves to used as more than just a backdrop for life or death fights. Honestly, the best parts of Index is when Touma is just interacting with people, Railgun is the same, it just dedicates time to it.

Things get much bigger and over the top after WWIII in the novel that was the climax of the first novel series. The sequel series of Index after the first novel series take place over like a month and half over 23 volumes. Not even counting the third series which had only been from Dec.24- Jan 8 or is it Jan. 9/Jan.10 now, which 13 book of the third series which volume 13 ending at a cliffhanger and volume 14 will likely start right after it.The crazy thing is that Kamachi would 100% be able to find time for Railgun only arc to still happen in that time of 1 and a half month that the second series take place in. Even if Mikoto is somehow still playing at least a side character level role in over 3/4 of the 23 volume of the second series. Also at least a cameo in all the volumes beside NT 4, and I think NT 11.
